Roy Dean Nelson, born on May 15, 1944, to Lee Allen Nelson and Hazel Dean Nelson, lived a life deeply rooted in faith, family, and a profound love for the outdoors. He was a man of unwavering belief, devoted to his church family, and known for his generous spirit. Roy never hesitated to lend a helping hand to anyone in need, embodying kindness in both word and deed.

Roy shared 42 years of marriage with his beloved wife, Sara Frances Nelson, until her passing in 2019. Their union was one of love, partnership, and steadfast devotion.

Family was Roy’s greatest joy. He was happiest when surrounded by his children, grandchildren, great‑grandchildren, and even great‑great‑grandchildren. His grandchildren especially cherish memories of walking through the woods and trails on his land—Roy always made sure each child had a walking stick, because they wanted to be just like him. Whether hunting, fishing, or simply gathering with loved ones, Roy found peace and purpose in the outdoors and in the company of those he held dear.

Roy was preceded in death by his parents, Lee Allen Nelson and Hazel Dean Nelson; his wife, Sara Frances Nelson; two sons, Ricky Hodge and Leonard Hodge; a grandson, Austin Hodge; two brothers, Ray Nelson and Mike Nelson; and one sister, Betty Culver.

On August 4, 2026, Roy passed away peacefully at his residence.

He leaves behind a loving family who will forever cherish his memory: two sons, John (Vasana) Hodge of Goodwater, Alabama; Jimmy (Tina) Nelson of New Site, Alabama; two daughters, Barbara (Richard) Norrell of Opelika, Alabama; and Sheri (Larry) Lorenzen of Tampa, Florida; two brothers, Jack Nelson and Donald Nelson; and a host of grandchildren, great‑grandchildren, and great‑great‑grandchildren, each of whom he loved deeply.

Roy’s legacy is one of faith, generosity, and family devotion. His presence will be missed, but the love he shared and the memories he created will continue to live on in the hearts of all who knew him.
