Graveside service for Mrs. Dorothy "Dot" Hughlett of Phoenix, Arizona will be 1:00 p.m. Wednesday, March 11, 2020 at Lockhart Cemetery in Dadeville, Alabama.
Dorothy Helene Hughlett was born on August 23, 1940 in Covington, Tennessee to the late Eugene Braden and late Fannie Sherrill. While in the presence of her family Dorothy was called to fill her place with the Lord on February 20, 2020.
Dorothy was raised and enjoyed life, in Tennessee where she birth seven of her children. She relocated to Long Island New York where she met the love of her life Ben and together, they birthed two children. Dorothy aka “Dot” was known for her large family, loving commitment to her spouse, relationship with Jesus, southern values, sense of humor, willingness to help anyone in need, role as the mother of the neighborhood, playing spades, applying swift discipline if needed and Most of ALL for being “Grandma Dot”. Dorothy worked for the Economic Opportunity Commission in Hempstead, New York where she was a Foster Grandparent for the elderly and spent over 20 years driving school buses for Veteran Transportation in Great Neck, New York. Dot was loved by many children and parents for safely transporting the children daily. Although she spent many hours working with children, she would spend her weekends taking her family and loved ones on our own field trips. Dot would always know how to get there and would always be ready to drive without hesitation.
Dorothy relocated to Phoenix AZ where she provided love and cared for many of her grandchildren and loved ones as a babysitter. She would travel all over the US to visit with family and friends. Her goal was to travel often and spend time with her family. In 2008 Dorothy joined Champions for Christ Ministries Inc. and was inducted to the CFC family where she remained a member until her passing. Her love for Christ was always expressed and displayed as she would take her grandchildren to hear the word as often as possible.
Dorothy “Dot” Hughlett was preceded in death by Jesse Hughlett Sr. and her spouse the love of her life Benjamin Russell. She leaves to cherish her memory 9 children: Debra Green of Baltimore, MD; Annette Harris of Freeport, New York; Fannie Hughlett of Melbourne, Fl; Gertie Hughlett of Hempstead, New York; Jesse (Ada) Hughlett , Janet Hughlett , Eddie Hughlett, Vanessa Russell-Gibson, and Charles Russell all of Phoenix, AZ. She leaves (1) stepdaughter which she raised as her own Vanessa (Andrew) Hobson of West Babylon, New York and (1) stepson Anthony Scott of Alexander City, AL. (35) Grandchildren, (40) great Grandchildren, (2) great great grandchildren, a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and close friends.
