On January 6, 1952, Felix Gilbert, Sr. and Mattie Will Page Gilbert welcomed a new son, whom they named Charlie Lee. He was the fifth child born to this union.
At an early age he professed Christ and was baptized at Mt. Hermon Baptist Church under the leadership of Rev. C. L. Daughtry. As a young boy Charlie attended Drew School in Lanett, Alabama and in 1969 he graduated from Rehobeth High School, where he enjoyed playing on the basketball team. After graduating high school, he attended Opelika Technical College in Opelika, Alabama and Southern Union State Community College in Wadley, Alabama.
He was employed for many years at West Point Stevens, Shawmut Mill. However, he was best known for his profession as a Barber. His shop was often a place where many men came not only for haircuts but for socializing and Bible discussions. Charlie had a love for photography, taking pictures at many local events. He loved children so much that he volunteered to be Santa’s Helper during the Christmas Season at various locations in the community. He also took great pride in having a well manicured lawn as well as many beautiful flowers. He was an avid reader, collecting a library of books over the years which included inspirational subjects, biographies and biblical teachings. Charlie was a mentor and father figure to so many young men and women, playing an important role and making a positive impact on their lives.
On November 1, 1980, Charlie was united in Holy Matrimony to Deborah Hill. To their union, two children were born, Charles “Chachi” and Reagan, joining their older sister Christie who was born during a previous marriage.
In 2004 Charlie united with Evening Spring Baptist Church in Lanett, Alabama under the leadership of Rev. Elijah Jackson, Jr. He was a former Sunday School Superintendent and served as a faithful member until his death. When he wasn’t attending Evening Spring, he enjoyed attending Sunday School (often reviewing the lesson), Bible Study and Church Services at St. John Baptist Church, New Love Union Baptist Church and Pilgrim Baptist Church where Pastor Trammell, Pastor Poole and Pastor James, respectively, and their church families, welcomed him with open arms.
Charlie was preceded in death by his parents; siblings, Mollie Mae Gilbert, Felix Gilbert, Jr., Maureen Hargett and Mary Varner; and, by a grandson, Anthony Gilbert. On Monday, September 10, 2018 while surrounded by loved ones, God sent His loving angels to give him eternal rest.
His memories will forever be cherished by: his devoted wife of 38 years, Deborah Hill Gilbert; his loving children, Christie and her husband Walter Payton, Birmingham, AL, Charles and his wife Angela Gilbert, Houston, TX and Reagan Gilbert, Lanett, AL; his beloved grandson, Malcolm Gilbert, Houston, TX; siblings, George Gilbert, West Point, GA and Carrie (Arthur) Atkinson, Lanett, AL; sisters-in-law, Ruth (Fred) Johnson, Sandra H. Thornton, Cheryl Hill and Helen Gilbert; brothers-in-law, Otis Hill, Edward Hill, Terry (Regina) Hill, Stanley (Donna) Hill and Dave Varner; best friend since childhood, Tony (Bettye) Barnes and many nieces, nephews, god children with whom he adored and shared a special bond; other loving relatives and friends.
To the Gilbert family, May Jehovah the God of love give you the needed strength to endure throughout these trying times. May Mr. Gilbert's memories continue to live through each of you. I hope that you can find comfort in God's word at Rev 21:4 "And he will wipe out every tear from their eyes, and death will be no more, neither will mourning nor outcry nor pain be anymore. The former things have passed away" -Victoria Daniel

On behalf of my family, I send my heartfelt condolences to Deborah and the entire Gilbert and Hill family. Charlie and my late husband, Tommy were friends when I met him in 1977. There was never a time when I saw Charles when he would not stop and hold a heartfelt, concerned about everyone, conversation with me. Charles passion for whatever he was doing, shopping in The grocery store, cutting boys hair, manicuring his lawn, loving his family, was evident and expressed with joy and a loving smile. Charles, that I knew, I know was a man after God’s heart. Charles loved everyone. Take care of yourself Deborah. Perhaps on Monday, Tommy and Charles reunited and begin sharing lawn care stories, as well as how much the both of them loved their families.❤️❤️ I love the entire Gilbert and Hill family. May the peace that passes all understanding, which only God gives to us, comfort and keep your family, in days and years to come. Mildred Watson
