Obituary For Barbara Sue Smith

Barbara Sue Smith, affectionately known as “Aunt Sue” to many, including those not related by blood, passed away peacefully on January 29, 2026, at the age of 79, at Florence Hand in LaGrange, Georgia.

Sue was born in 1946 in Safford, Alabama, and graduated in 1964 from J.U. Blacksher High School in Uriah, Alabama. Throughout her working years, she was employed at Uriah Trading Company in Uriah, Vanity Fair in Monroeville, and Patillo’s in West Point, Georgia. For decades, she was also a highly successful Avon representative, earning numerous awards as a top-selling agent. Despite her professional accomplishments, Sue often said her proudest and most meaningful role was that of a mother.

Sue gave generously of her time and heart, volunteering for more than 20 years at Lanier Hospital as a Pink Lady. When her children were in school, she took pride in being a room mom, lovingly planning class parties and supporting school activities. She was a long-time member of the West Point Women’s Club and enjoyed making floral arrangements, a hobby that reflected her creativity and eye for beauty.

Sue was also a passionate photographer, capturing countless memories at family gatherings, celebrations, and everyday moments. She rarely went anywhere without a camera in hand, ensuring that no memory went undocumented.

A lifelong University of Alabama football fan, Sue proudly supported the Crimson Tide. She especially loved the elephant mascot and delighted in collecting elephant-themed trinkets and keepsakes, many of which filled her home. Game days brought her joy, and she never missed an opportunity to cheer on her team with a familiar refrain: Roll Tide.

In her quieter moments, Sue enjoyed playing online games and staying up late. A true night owl, she happily kept her own schedule, often sleeping in and enjoying life at her own pace.

She is survived by her devoted husband, Ronald G. Smith of West Point, Georgia. The couple would have celebrated 60 years of marriage in October 2026, a milestone reflecting a lifetime of love and commitment. She is also survived by her daughter, Cindy Smith Huff, and her son-in-law, Lamar Paul Huff, both of LaGrange, Georgia. She is also survived by her beloved grandson, Carson Paul Huff of Atlanta, Georgia, who lovingly called her “Nina.” Sue was preceded in death by her son, George Ronald Smith.

She will be remembered for her sweet and kind spirit, her quick wit, her bright mind, her willingness to help others, and the love she poured into her family and community. Her legacy lives on through the many lives she touched and the countless memories she preserved. As she would say, make sure you take more pictures.

A funeral service will be held on Saturday, February 7, 2026, at 11:00 a.m. EST at St. John’s Episcopal Church in West Point, Georgia. A graveside service will follow at Marseilles Cemetery in West Point, Georgia.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to a local humane society or, in memory of Sue, to her longtime church, St. John’s Episcopal Church of West Point, Georgia.
