Obituary For Velmon Godfrey

We regretfully announce the passing of Mrs. Velmon Godfrey of Gay, Georgia, age 97, on Saturday, February 1, 2025 at Wellstar West Georgia Hospice in LaGrange, Georgia.

Funeral Services will be held at 1:00 PM on Friday, February 7, 2025 at Sunnyside Baptist Church located on Highway 362 in Greenville, Georgia.

Rev. Tony Calhoun, Pastor and Rev. Tim Amey, Eulogist. Interment will follow in the Church Cemetery.

Public viewing will be held on Thursday from 11:00 AM to 7:00 PM at the Funeral Home.

Velmon Godfrey born to the late Robert & Emily Williams on Sept 20, 1927 in Sharpsburg, Ga. She was the twelfth child out of her siblings. Velmon attended school at Ebenzer in Coweta County. Velmon joined Liberty Hill Methodist at an early age and from there to Ebenzer Baptist Church and she later changed her membership over to Sunnyside Baptist Church in Greenville, Ga. At Sunnyside she served as a usher, a devoted senior choir member, church treasurer, and the motherboard

Velmon worked as a housekeeper and also helped share crops on the farm. After she and AB stopped farming she worked at Holiday Inn. Later, she was employed by Shaw Industry where she worked until she retired. She worked in her retirement at Belk department store part time until her car accident. Even after her accident that did not stop her. She enjoyed spending time at the Senior Center, where she served as a cook.

Velmon had a green thumb for her flowers and her vegetable garden. Each year she took time to plant and cultivate a vegetable garden. She definitely enjoyed baking, especially her homemade buttermilk biscuits, and her melt in your mouth pound cakes but that was just one of the many cakes she would bake.
She also loved to fish as well. Velmon was known for her beautiful big hats with her elegant skirt suits. She had the fashion game on lock.

Velmon was married to the late AB Godfrey on January 19th, 1946. Within their union they had five kids with one son preceded her in death AJ( Carolyn) Godfrey. Nelson( Linda) Godfrey, Joseph(Anita) Godfrey, AC (Edith) Godfrey and Sarah ( Joe) Martin.

Velmon leaves to cherish her memory: three sons Nelson(Linda) Godfrey, Joseph (Anita) Godfrey of Luthersville, Ga and AC (Edith) Godfrey of Sharpsburg, Ga ; one daughter Sarah (Joe) Martin of Sharpsburg, Ga. Velmon had one devoted friend Ms. Ollie Long. Two favorite nieces Rosie Amey and Katie Williams. She also had two favorite nephews Bobby Williams and Dyvine Bolton. Velmon was blessed with 18 grandkids, 41 great grands, and 26 great great grands. She also leaves behind a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
