We respectfully announce the passing of Mr. James Eugene Matthews, age 76, of Jonesboro, Georgia on Friday, July 8, 2022 at Piedmont Henry Hospital in Stockbridge, Georgia.
Funeral Services will be held at 1:00 PM on Thursday, July 14, 2022 at Macedonia Baptist Church located on Goldmine Road in Grantville, Georgia. Pastor Johnny Strickland, Eulogist.
The body will lie in state at the church from 12 Noon until the hour of service.
Public viewing will be Wednesday from 11:00 AM to 7:00 PM.
Due to COVID-19 concerns everyone in attendance at the viewing and the Funeral must wear a mask and social distancing is encouraged.
Mr. James Eugene Matthews was born October 30th, 1945 to the late Mr. Charlie Sr. and Cora Matthews. He was an active member at Macedonia Baptist Church as a Deacon and Secretary. He graduated from Greenville Consolidated High in 1963 in Greenville, GA. After high school, he joined the United States Army in 1965 and served in the Vietnam War. Shortly after serving his country, he went to work at Ford Motor Company where he retired after 39 years.
In 1968, he married Patricia Matthews (54 years) and had four children together from that union.
James leaves to mourn his wife Patricia, daughter Phyllis Matthews, four sons Willie (Elaine) Iceson, Darrell (Shunda), and Carlos (Sonya), Antwon (TaShea), one sister Emma Jean (Charles), one brother Fredrick, grandchildren Sametria, Contorious (Shameka), Thaddeus (Kiana), Willie, Shacquayvia (Dominique), Shaquille, Tray, Lyric, Zanquayvia, Ayana, Angel, four great grandchildren Conkeria, CJ, Tyson, Za’Doriah, sister-in-laws Ethel Bolton, Frances Matthews, Dorothy Hines, and a host of nieces and nephews, cousins, and other relatives and friends.
He also leaves his loving companion Mattie Ruth Buchanan along with her daughter Kim (JP), three sons Antwon (TaShea), Theron, and Dano (Melanie), nine grandchildren Zoey, Noah, Jazz, Devan, Morris, Alisha, Anaka, Zachary, LeMon, and one great grandchild Khaiden.
Preceding him in death were his parents Charlie Sr. and Cora Matthews, four brothers Charlie William Jr, John Marshall, Richard Lee, and Julius Randolph, one sister Rosa Ann Shy, two brothers-in-laws Johnny Shy and James Hines, and two sisters-in-laws, Lydia and Arlena.

Mr. James, as my family so fondly called him will be dearly missed. He has been a great neighbor. He was a great asset to our neighborhood. He was always willing to give a helping hand.
