Command Sergeant Major Retired William M. Mayo of Columbus passed away Monday at his home at the age of 87.
A native of Bracey, VA and the son of the late Nannie E. Mayo Craddock and Alvettee A. Craddock. Mr. Mayo retired from the U.S. Army after 30 years of service. He received numerous awards, medals and citations namely the Bronze Star, Silver Star, Purple Heart and the Vietnam Service Medal with 4 Bronze Stars. Mr. Mayo excelled while receiving his Bachelor's and Master's degree from Troy State University. He was employed as an Insurance Agent with the Noncommissioned Officer Association (NCOA). later establishing the Mayo Agency for Life and Health Insurance. He also was the Instructor for the Muscogee County Junior Marshall Program. He was a member of Greater St. Mark A.M.E. Church where he was Steward protem of the William Mayo Board of Stewards, member of the Male Chorus, Mass Choir and the Ushers Ministry. He was the former president of the Mens Progressive Club. Other than his parents, he was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Annie Doris Mayo and his son, Benjamin W. Mayo.
Survivors include two devoted daughters, Annette Mayo Williams (Wilbert) and Theresa Mayo; four grandchildren, Wilbert L. Williams II, Warren L. Williams, Zacori Mayo and Taylor Q. Perry; three great grandchildren, McKinzley A., Jasaya A. and Doris I. Perry; beloved fur babies, Diamond, Thor and Bowzer; host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
Mr. Mayo will be laid to rest with his wife at Evergreen Memorial Park on Saturday, June 15, 2024 after an 11:00 AM Homegoing Celebration at Greater St. Mark A.M.E. Church officiated by Pastor George Moore.
Visitation is from 2:00 to 5:00 PM on Friday 14th at the funeral home.
