Samuel Roosevelt Short Jr., the first born son of the late Samuel Roosevelt Short Sr. and the late Julia Costello Mack was born September 2, 1951 in Washington, DC. He departed this earthly life for a place of eternal rest on Tuesday, February 12, 2024, at the Suncoast Hospice Care Center in Pinellas Park, Florida.
Samuel, affectionately known as "Sammy" (to his siblings) or "Sam"(to his friends), was the oldest of seven children. His formative years were spent on various military bases throughout the United States, including Hawaii (Fort Ruger), Washington, DC (Walter Reed), and Columbus, GA (Fort Moore). He was a member of First Rising Mount Zion Baptist Church, until moving to Florida.
Sam was educated in the D.C. public school system, and graduated from Calvin Coolidge Senior High School in 1970. He entered the Navy in 1971, and after serving a brief time in Vietnam, was medically discharged in 1972.
Samuel was joined in marriage to Linda Stafford in 1972. From this union one son was born, the late Samuel R. Short III. (Tamela). In the years to follow, Sam met and married Kim Taylor-Short. Together they were blessed with a daughter, Tiffany Short.
Sam worked various jobs including the YMCA, CT Hellmuth (Lincoln National Life Insurance), and as a postman with the United States Postal Service. He enjoyed anything related to water including surfing, fishing, and swimming. He was also an avid sports enthusiast, and frequently watched and rooted for his favorite teams like The Washington Redskins, and Baltimore Orioles. In his later years after retirement, he became a fan of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
Samuel was preceded in death by his son Samuel III, and two grandchildren, Calvin Ellsworth Bates III, and Ethan Alexander. Samuel leaves loving memories that will be cherished forever as his family celebrates his life, his wife Kim, one daughter, Tiffany Evelyn, and one step-son, Terrance Sr. One great-aunt, Ardahlia Mack (Julius), three brothers, Cornelius M. (Annie), Edward Christy (Rebecca), Steven A. (Elizabeth), three sisters, Ardahlia G., Aundrahlia L. (Iverson), Suzanne V. Gilchrist, and one close cousin, Garland I. Mack (Lisa). Six Grandchildren, Alex Washington, Jahnay Tipton (Christopher), Terrance Jr., Elijah, Tyler, and Kimberly Bates. Two great-grandchildren, Samuel R. and Carter C., and a host of nieces, nephews, and friends.
The Memorial Service for Mr. Short will be held on Thursday, March 7, 2024 at 11:30 AM at McCartha Drive Church of Christ, 165 McCartha Drive, Columbus, GA with interment at Ft. Mitchell National Cemetery at 2:30 PM (Sharp) 553 Highway 165, Fort Mitchell, AL 36856.
