Paul J. Harris Sr., a beloved husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and proud American, passed away on May 10, 2025, at the age of 79.
Born on August 28, 1945, to Eddie N. Harris Sr. and Clara Shipp-Harris, Paul lived a life defined by courage, service, strength, and unwavering love for his family and country. A proud Vietnam veteran, Paul answered the call to serve his nation during a time of great unrest, displaying bravery and honor that would come to characterize his entire life.
After his military service, Paul continued his commitment to public service through a career in law enforcement and later with the D.C. Department of Corrections. In each role, he earned the respect of his peers and community for his integrity, resilience, and steadfast dedication to justice.
Paul was a man of quiet strength who led by example and loved deeply. He was preceded in death by his beloved son, Paul J. Harris Jr. (Shakeena), and his cherished daughter, Lucretia Miller. Though their loss weighed heavily on him, he carried their memory in his heart with dignity and grace.
He is survived by his loving wife, Mary Burkgart-Harris, who stood faithfully by his side through every season of life; his siblings, Eddie Harris Jr., Clarence Harris Sr., and Lydia Mallory; and his children: Paul, Jeffery (Tara), Leonard, Damon (Nadine), Tonya, Kenya (Abel), and Dakendra. Each of them carries forward his legacy of strength, wisdom, and enduring love.
Paul's life was further blessed by a host of grandchildren and great-grandchildren, who brought him endless joy and to whom he was a constant source of guidance, storytelling, and unconditional love.
His life was a testament to service, sacrifice, and devotion to family. Paul J. Harris Sr. will be remembered not only for his lifetime of dedication and hard work, but for the gentle, loving man he was at home. His legacy of honor and love will live on in the hearts of all who knew him.

Paul Harris was a Woodland Park East 7th Street, Manley Taylor - Marshall Junior High and Wm. Spencer High child raised in a wonderful large family of Harris's, Harvey's, Shipp's and Walkers. Paul was a rough and tumble guy who in many ways was a private person. He and I were joined in the activities that our Mother's made with the Thrifty Social and Savings Club. They held family events that the neighborhood enjoyed. We were watched over by the older boys and girls and all of the adults. We were protected and mentored to become respectful young men. Paul led his own life after high school. I wished we had spent more time together, but it was not to be. I pray for peace of spirit for him. Rest now Paul. You deserve it. Toby Turner
