Sergeant First Class (Retired) Matthew McLewis Timmons transitioned peacefully Thursday at Midtown Medical Center at the age of 76.
The son of the late Malachi, Sr. and Inez Dawkins Timmons, Sgt. Timmons was born in Dade City, FL. He was a United States Army Veteran of 23 1/2 years, who was also retired from the United States Postal Service following 16 years as a mail handler. He was a member of Smiths Grove AME Zion Church where he served as a Trustee, Steward and with the Sons of Varick. He was also a Mason. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Marion Timmons and Malachi Timmons, Jr.
Surviving his departure with cherished memories, include: his wife of 48 years, Mrs. Carolyn Johnson Timmons; three sons, Mark Timmons, Robert Timmons, Sr. and Michael Davis; three daughters, Teri Green (Steven), Angelyn Chaney and Vivian Swinson; six grandchildren; Brandon Green, Caroline Chaney, Robert Timmons, Jr., Cameron Green, Kennedi Chaney and Dantrell Marshall; two great grandchildren, Kenzo Green and Cayson Jenkins; a devoted niece and two nephews, Felicia Plummer, Dwayne Hill and Douglas Wright; loving in-laws, Dr. Betty Smith, Jacqueline Williams (Nathaniel) and Constance Wright (Larry); a host of other loving nieces and nephews, cousins and friends.
The Homegoing Celebration for SFC Timmons will be Saturday, January 5, 2019 at 12 noon at the Smiths Grove AME Zion Church with Pastor Reverend Dr. Linda Wright officiating.
Visitation will begin Today at 2 p.m. with a Family Hour from 5 til 6 p.m. at the funeral home.
