Marcelle Smith, 87 years old, of Columbus, GA passed away Wednesday, January 27, 2021. She will have a visitation on Friday, February 5 beginning at 4:30 PM and ending at 6:00 PM. The praise and celebration will be held on Saturday, February 6, 2021 at 2:00 PM at Green Acres Cemetery, 1485 Schatulga Road, Columbus, GA 31907.
Marcelle was born and raised in Abilene, Texas on November 2, 1933 to the late Mr. Dock and Rosa Forkerway Barnes. Marcelle was the youngest of 8 children.
Mrs. Smith departed this life on Wednesday, January 27, 2021 with loving people by her side as she closed her eyes.
She attended Carter G. Woodson public school in Abilene, Texas.
Marcelle met and married John Elijah Smith, Sr. "Smitty" the love of her life in 1956 at the young age of 23. They were married 60 years. They was blessed with 2 children, Pamela Smith-Cotton and John Elijah Smith, Jr. "Sonny"
Mrs. Smith confessed her soul to the Lord at a young age as he was her Personal Savior. She was a faithful member of Greater Ward Chapel AME Church for over 40 years. She took pleasure being part of the Missionary Society, Shirley Winston Pinochle Club, National Pinochle Association and Columbus Pinochle Club. Going to the casino was one of her passions that she took joy in doing.
She was preceded in death by her daughter, Pamela J. Smith-Cotton; her son, John Elijah Smith, Jr. "Sonny"; her devoted husband, John Elijah Smith, Sr. "Smitty"; her mother, Rosa Forkerway Barnes Barnes; father, Dock Barnes; 4 sisters, Corine Barnes, Katherine Barnes, Ardie Ree Barnes and Mary Louise Gindratt; 3 brothers, William Frank Barnes, Walter Barnes and George Barnes, Sr.
Left to cherish her memories are a special friend/sister Mrs. Sherald Thomas whom she spent the holidays and other joyful occasions with. A brother-in-law, Henry M. Gindratt, Sr., a special nephew, Henry M. Gindratt II; 3 cherished nieces, Amber Gindratt-Kirk, Annette Barnes and Yolanda Barnes Traylor. A host of other nieces, nephews, friends and family.
