Johnny Clarence Woods, 82, of Columbus, GA, peacefully passed away on March 21, 2025, at Parkwood Health Care located in Phenix City, Al of Natural Causes.
John was born on August 21, 1942, in Gary, Indiana, and was adopted by Jesse and Florence Woods on July 26, 1945 at the tender age of 3. From an early age, he was full of life and dedicated to pursuing happiness. Michael and Robbie Houston fostered him until he graduated from Roosevelt High School in Gary, Indiana.
John’s first job was as a furniture salesman. He later joined the U.S. Army on February 28, 1961, and served for one year as a cook stationed in Germany with the 522d QM Co. After his military service, he became a licensed insurance broker, launching a successful career until his retirement.
In 1974, John met his wife, Mary, and they had one son, Jonathan. Being a father, grandfather, and great-grandfather was his greatest joy. Although he faced challenges as a parent due to his lifestyle, he worked to heal relationships, forgive himself, and make amends.
John carried himself with a royal attitude, full of “Chicago swag.” He was a passionate reader of nonfiction, a devoted sports fan, and a jazz enthusiast. His favorite pastime was watching TV in the garage while smoking his cigarettes. He was known for his humor, his love for conversation, and his confidence in his (not-so-great) card-playing and driving skills. He loved Chicago-style stepping—until his hip gave out after three minutes! Above all, he believed in building not just structures or bridges but lasting relationships and memories.
John is survived by:
• His brother, Michael Houston (Pamela) of Yuma, Arizona
• His children: Duwanna D. Ellis of Columbus, GA; Tracy Reece (Albert) of Chicago, IL; Jonathan Woods (Amy) of Cincinnati, IN; and Kevin Pearson (Tanya) of Florence, AL
• His grandsons: Tyree Pearson of Austin, TX; Brad Tipton of California; and Julian N.K. Ellis (Quashawnda) of Atlanta, GA•
His great-granddaughters: Jaliyah Mims-Ellis of Goodlettsville, TN, and Jiselle B.R. Ellis of Atlanta, GA
His bonus great-grandchildren Quenyanna Watkins, & Jullian McNamee of Atlanta, GA
• A host of extended family and friends, including Chris Crain, who provided support during John’s time in Milwaukee, Larry Whitmore, his closest friend and dedicated companion in times of need; and Donta L. Stewart, his go-to person for information or support!
John was preceded in death by his adoptive parents, Jesse and Florence Woods; his foster parents, James and Robbie Houston; his wife, Mary; and two grandsons, Jerrall Kadeem Ellis and Kia Yamel Yancey.
