Mrs. Evelyn Marlene McCall transitioned home peacefully on Saturday, February 7 at Orchard View Nursing Home. She was 91 years old.
The daughter of Eddie T. Lindsey, Jr., and Blanche Ferrell Lindsey Baldwin, Mrs. McCall was a native of Phenix City, Alabama. She was a proud graduate of Spencer High School, and continued her academic success at Savannah State College (now University), where she received a bachelor’s degree in mathematics and physics. During her tenure at Savannah State, she joined the Delta Nu Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated in November 1958. Mrs. McCall earned her master’s degree from the University of Massachusetts with a concentration in Mathematics Education, Urban Education, and Leadership.
After teaching in Columbus for a couple of years, Mrs. McCall moved to Washington, D.C., living in both D.C., and Maryland, where she lived until returning to Columbus in 2000. In D.C, she initially worked as a Mathematician for the Census Bureau. She found, though, that her first love was teaching and returned to the academic world, teaching mathematics, and SAT/PSAT Test Preparation at a number of junior and senior high schools in Washington, D.C. She also served as Assistant Principal at Ballou High School. She retired from the D.C. Public School System in 1988, shortly after her beloved grandson Branden Edward Hughes, was born.
Before leaving Maryland, she was honored and recognized by the Governor of the State of Maryland and the Prince George’s County Executive for her years of service in education.
Upon her return to Columbus, one of the first steps she took was to re-unite with First African Baptist Church – the church she attended with her late mother Blanche Baldwin – while growing up. And once she rejoined the church, she got to work! Initially, she served as a Sunday Church School teacher for the Teens, was a member of the Esther Missionary Circle, and a faithful participant in Wednesday night Bible Study.
Within a few short years, Rev. Robert Dickerson, former Pastor of FAB, called on her to serve as Director of Christian Education. After that, she also served as Chair of Women’s Day in 2003, launched the Christian Education Ministry Annual Women’s Conference, introduced an inter-generational curriculum for Vacation Bible School, and was named Woman of the Year in 2007.
Other than her parents, Mrs. McCall was preceded in death by one sister, Eleanor White, and two brothers, Eddie T. Lindsey, Jr., and Lt. Colonel Charles Lindsey. Survivors include one brother, Harry L. Lindsey (Columbus); two daughters, Bronwyn Hughes (Columbus) and Wendy Jackson (Chicago), one son, Shannon Patrick McCall (Columbus); four grandchildren, Branden Hughes, Columbus, John Hudgison, Tampa, (Niecey), Chris Hudgison, Jonesboro, Arkansas (Beth), Niara Jackson (Chicago); four great grandchildren, devoted niece Karen Lindsey Carter (Columbus), nephews Bruce White, Columbus (Sandra), Glenn White, Columbus (Pat), Charles Lindsey, Jr., Oxnard, California (Tammy), Chris Lindsey (Columbus), Eddie T. Lindsey III, Columbus (Shar), Tyrone Lindsey, New Zealand (Shelley), great nieces, Keshia White (Atlanta), Kimberly White (Atlanta), Kaitlyn Carter (Columbus); great nephews Bruce White, Jr., Louisville, and Brian White, Louisville; cousins, friends, church members, and sorority sisters.
