Obituary For Boast Cephas Carswell, Jr.

Prominent local luminary and legend in education, B.C. “Coach”
Carswell, Jr., transitioned to his heavenly home on Sunday, July
5, 2026, at the blessed age of 87. He was born May 22, 1939, in
Atlanta, Georgia, to the late Mrs. Viola (née Davis) Carswell, Mrs.
Johnnie M. Carswell, and Elder Dr. B.C. Carswell, Sr. B.C.
Carswell was a longtime educator, coach, and beloved
community figure in Columbus. For nearly half a century, his
ultimate work and mission included being highly involved in local
school partnerships, a sincere advocate for youth, and possessed
an undaunting dedication to educational initiatives throughout the
Muscogee County School District and beyond.

His humble beginnings led him to attend Center High School in
Waycross, Class of 1958. After high school graduation, he earned
his higher education degree from Savannah State University
(formerly Savannah State College). While at Savannah State, he
was deeply involved in extraordinary experiences. He was an
active member and officer (Dean of Pledgees) of the Delta Eta
Chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Incorporated between
1959 and 1963. His matriculation at Savannah State served as
the structural foundation for his lifelong career in technical
education, athletic coaching, and student mentorship in the
Columbus community.

In addition to his career in education and coaching, his ties to
competitive sports ran deep in the region. Coach Carswell proudly
served 55 years as a referee official for high school and college
football games. His joy of sporting events was evident by his
consistent efforts in shaping the lives of student-athletes. As a
coach, he emphasized discipline, teamwork, and academic
responsibility, helping students balance their time between the
classroom and the playing field. As an avid spectator, he was the
keeper of seasonal tickets to the Atlanta Falcons’ football games.
B.C. Carswell, Jr. had a call on his life to coach not only athletics,
but to teach mathematical concepts. Not just to teach, but to
strengthen young minds to travel to places that were
unimaginable at that time. His longest tenure was at his beloved
William Henry Spencer High School, as he celebrated his
retirement there in 2005. During his illustrious career, he was the
first person to teach Driver’s Education in the district. His passion
for Columbus’ history was revealed in his love for photography.
The Muscogee County School District (MCSD) honored Coach
B.C. Carswell’s deep community roots and his visual legacy of
photography with a stellar commendation. Coach created pictorial
tapestries that integrated historical perspectives within the district.
His work is exhibited in the school district’s historical preservation
initiatives, such as the official Muscogee County School District
History Project, The Legacy of Learning Wall, and The William
Henry Spencer High School archives. His historical commentary
is formally documented within the narrative analyses of Muscogee
County’s desegregation process by Dr. Kimberly Brown-Boynton.
B.C. Carswell bridged athletic triumphs with a perpetual record of
local historical and educational achievements. He preserved oral
histories explaining how Spencer's Greenwave identity originally
emerged as a physical canvas of the green and gold uniforms of
football players stretched across the athletic gridiron. His
educational philosophy deeply aligned with the original mission of
Spencer High School, “Enter to Learn, Depart to Serve.” His
opportunity to extensively travel, his phenomenal photography,
and his innumerable documented milestones contributed
immensely to the lives of educators, coaches, and students in the
local bi-city area.

B.C. Carswell, Jr. built a lifelong legacy in Columbus, Georgia, by
seamlessly weaving his passion for youth athletics and public
education with a resounding sense of compassion. His strong
sense of empathy towards humanity and acumen for logistics
extended to grieving families by working closely for several years
at the Progressive Funeral Home as an attendant. In addition to
his parents, he is preceded in death by his former wife, Mrs.
Margaret Horne Carswell; his brother, Mr. Daniel Webster
Carswell; his niece, Mrs. Caryn Carswell-Kirby; his
granddaughter, Little Miss Adaiah Carswell-Patrick; and his
lifelong friend, 1SG (Retired) Odell Hardimon.

His life, love, and support as a father, godfather, uncle, mentor, and friend will be missed by his lovely daughter, Ms. Carolyn Carswell; his adoring
niece, Mrs. Cathy Carswell-Banks; his beautiful goddaughters,
Mrs. Sydelle Morse-Jacobs, Ms. Tamera Morse, and Dr. Sonja
Matthews-Coaxum; his amazing godson, Mr. Bryant Alcorn; and a
few of his many cherished friends, Mrs. Olivia Thomas-Rutledge,
Mr. Sherman Williams, Mr. William Joe Crawford, Mr. Ben Elder,
Ms. Julia Johnson, Mr. Daniel Hill, and Dr. Patricia James. B.C.
Carswell leaves other extended family members, former students,
and dear friends.
