Mrs. Alna Ford Porter of Columbus transitioned home peacefully Wednesday, August 11, 2021 at St. Francis Hospital. She was 89 years of age.
Born in Stewart County, GA on October 26, 1931, Mrs. Porter was the daughter of the late Alfred and Agnes Griffin Ford. She was a graduate of Beach High School in Savannah and obtained her Bachelor's degree from Savannah State College. She received her Masters degree from Tuskegee Institute in Early Childhood education. She was a member of Holsey Chapel CME Church where she served faithfully for over 40 years as President of the Missionary Society. Mrs. Porter retired from the Muscogee County Schools following 19 years of service as an educator at Blanchard Elementary School and was a member of the Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority.
Other than her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Sergeant Major (Retired) Malachi Porter, and two brothers, Henderson Ford and Fred Ford, and a brother-in-law, Alfred Gant.
Surviving her departure with cherished memories, include her loving and devoted daughter, Maura Porter; one stepson, Robert Porter; a sister, Mary Agnes Gant; devoted nieces and nephews, Debbie Sullen (Al), Nancy Gray (Michael), Jacqueline Brown, David Brown (Cheryl), Mark Brown (Gwen), and Troy Debro (Tressa) a host of great nieces and nephews, cousins and friends.
The Homegoing Celebration in Memory of Mrs. Alna Ford Porter will be Tuesday, August 17, 2021 at 11:00 a.m. in the Sanctuary of Holsey Chapel CME Church with Pastor Curtis West officiating. The entombment will be in Parkhill Cemetery.

Visitation is Monday, 4 til 6:00 p.m. at the funeral home.

As I recallI working with Mrs. Alna Porter at Blanchard Elementary School, I extend my sincere condolences to her family. Mrs Porter was a dedicated second grade teacher who took her responsibility for teaching the children she served very seriously.
