Mr. Walter Huguley, 90, of Lanett, AL, departed this life on Tuesday, June 13, 2023 at the family home with family and friends at his side. Walter Huguley was born January 4, 1933, in Chambers County, Alabama.
Walter accepted Christ as his personal savior and united with the Evening Spring Baptist Church at an early age. He graduated from Lanier High School in 1952. Briefly after high school, Walter worked for West Point Pepperell as a mail room attendant. He was drafted by the US Army in 1953 and received an honorable discharge in 1955 with the rank of private first class. After his military service, he relocated to Detroit, Michigan, and was employed by the US Postal Service as a letter carrier. He subsequently transferred to Springfield, Massachusetts, where he worked in the Bulk Mail Center.
Walter was a great sports fan; he loved watching baseball, football, and boxing. He enjoyed playing checkers and bid whist. His favorite enjoyment was traveling across the country on the Greyhound bus lines for weeks at a time.
Walter was preceded in death by his father, Paul Floyd, Sr.; mother, Chinelia Ellis Huguley; stepfather, Joe R. Huguley, Sr.; five brothers, Paul Floyd, Jr., Larry W. Huguley, Daniel Floyd, James Floyd, and Willie Floyd; and three sisters, Pearl Floyd, Rose Floyd, and Martha Drake.
He leaves to cherish his memory: his two brothers, Joe R. Huguley, Jr., of Lanett, Alabama, and Wayne Floyd of Louisville, Kentucky; three sisters, Essie Taylor, Clementina Floyd, and Gloria Jones, all of Louisville, Kentucky; one sister-in-law, Dorothy Huguley of Brooklyn, New York; four nieces, Jennifer Huguley of Brooklyn, New York, Trudie Huguley of Long Island City, New York, Chilneda (Melvin) Lewis of Detroit, Michigan, and Shelia Strickland of Valley, Alabama; one nephew, Willie Floyd of Lagrange, Georgia; caregivers and sitters, Virginia Barnes of West Point, Georgia, and Henry Story of Lanett, Alabama; and a host of other relatives and friends.
Funeral Services for Mr. Huguley will be held on Tuesday, June 20, 2023 at 1:00 p.m. ET in the sanctuary of the Evening Spring Baptist Church, 4826 Country Club Road, Lanett, AL 36863, with Rev. Elijah Jackson, Pastor, Karanja Story, Eulogist, Rev. Dr. Jesse, Walker, II, Rev. Michael Stiggers and Rev. Bernard Williams, assisting.
Interment will be following in the Hillcrest Cemetery, 3202 Country Club Road, Lanett, AL 36863.
Public viewing will be held on Monday, June 19, 2023 from 2:00 p.m. ET until 6:00 p.m. at the mortuary.
