Sarah “Gladys” Winston was born on September 21,1935 to the late Sam Ross and the late Carrie James in West Point, GA.
She accepted Christ in her life at an early age, uniting with the Emmanuel Chapel CME Church, where she served faithfully as an usher and prayer warrior for 30 plus years. She was known as the community Mother.
She attended 10th Street High School in West Point, GA.
She met and married the love of her life, General Winston. They were married for 64 years before his demise. Out of this union of love, five beautiful children were born. Sarah retired from West Point Pepperell Mill after 20 years of dedicated service.
On Saturday, May 4, 2024, Sarah passed away at the Wellstar Hospice in LaGrange, GA.
She was preceded in death by her husband, General Winston; son, Chauncey “Chador” Winston; brother, Amos Sparks; brothers-in-law, Johnny B. Owens, Willis Lee Williams; sisters-in-law, Shame Winston, Lillie Pearl (Peter) Lovelace, Minnie Kate (Jessie) Abner; niece, Louise Dunning; nephew, Carl B. Winston.
She leaves to cherish her memory: her loving children, Curtis (Celeste) Winston, Marcie (Sandra) Winston, Dedra (Lee) Moore, and Marcus (Katherine) Winston; eighteen grandchildren, eleven great-grandchildren; two loving, sisters, Janell Owens, Valley, AL; Ruby (Arthur) Murphy, Mesa, AZ; four loving sisters-in-law; Bessie Lee Wright, Willie Mae Billingslea, West Point, GA; Emma Bonner, Detroit, MI; Arvella Williams, Alexander City, AL; spiritual daughter, Prophetess Marian Latimer; special nieces, that she reared as her own, Angela James, Rosa Stiggers, Cynthia Nkwokocha, Teresa Todd; special nephew, Amos Sparks, Jr.; Special friends, Martha Chappell-Shipman, Dorothy Pittman, Edith Davidson, Yvonne Mwikuta; gods-daughters, LaGayle Brewer-Bliss, Erica Bandy, Erica Scott; god-son, Carlton Buchanon; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends whom she loved so dearly.
Funeral Services for Mrs. Sarah “Gladys” Winston will be held on Saturday, May 11, 2024 at 1:00 p.m. in the sanctuary of the Emanuel Chapel CME Church, 1309 E. 10th Street, West Point, GA with Elder Lavisha Williams, Pastor and Dr. John Williams serving as the eulogist.
Interment will follow in the Marseilles Cemetery with 400-498 E. 10th Street, West Point, GA 31833
Public viewing will be held so Friday, May 10, 2024 from 2:00 p.m. until 6:00 p.m. at the mortuary.
