Obituary For Rebecca J. Monagan
Mrs. Rebecca J. Monagan of Lanett, AL passed away Monday, March 12, 2018 at her residence.
Homegoing Celebration for Mrs. Rebecca J. Monagan will be held on Saturday, March 17, 2018, 1:00 PM, ET at the Pine Grove United Methodist Church, 2181 County Road 162, LaFayette, AL 36862. Rev. Cecelia Broome will serve as the eulogist.
The remains will lie in state at the church on Saturday, March 17, 2018 from 12:00(noon) ET until the funeral hour.
Interment will be held in the Hillcrest Cemetery, Lanett, AL following the service.
Rebecca “BigMama” Monagan was the youngest of 13 children, born November 1st, 1925 to the late Nancy & Alex James in White Plains, Al. God knew she was getting tired and Rebecca departed this life on Monday March 12, 2018.
“Bigmama” as she was so affectionally called by many, was educated in the Chambers County School System. She joined the Pine Grove United Methodist Church, White Plains, Al. Up until her health begin to fail, she could be seen standing at the door serving as an usher and in the kitchen serving.
Rebecca was united in Holy Matrimony to Herman Johnson, who preceded her in death. To this union, seven children were born. After being a widower and raising her children, Rebecca remarried and united in marriage to Bobby L. Monagan, who also preceded her in death. With this union, she was able to help share in the rearing of his 4 children. Bigmama loved to share her home and her cooking with anyone. There was never a time you could not get a meal at 1500 Cherry Drive. She loved and cared for her children deeply.
Rebecca for many years was employed as a housekeeper and later gained employment with West Point Stevens at Riverview Mill. She retired after 10 years.
Rebecca was preceded in death by her son Herman, daughter Patricia and her twelve siblings.
Rebecca leaves to cherish her memories three sons, Rev. Curtis Johnson of Carrollton, Ga, Bobby Johnson of Lanett, Al, & Ricky Johnson of Lagrange, Ga., two daughters, Theresa Farrow (Sammie) and Vicky Johnson of Lanett, Al, four step-children, Bobbie Reid (Bobby), Oscar Monagan, Johnny Monagan (Shirley) and Marion Bryant. She also leaves to cherish her memories and legacy 16 grand children, 4 that she raised as her own, Rashieka Halcromb (Charles), Marcelyn Johnson, Taressa Thompson (Ralph), and Sadaka Johnson, DeWayne Johnson, Wayne Johnson, Juan Johnson, Lamar Johnson, Dexter Martin, Rod Johnson, Jovita Johnson, Sandricka Reed, Jarnez Reed, Jasmine Winston, Ricky Johnson, Jr, and Candice Johnson, ; 26 great grand children -8 that she raised as her own: Jamal Johnson, Rasean Halcromb, Janecia Jackson, Victor Jackson, Tiaria Johnson, RJ Johnson, Katada and Tiffany Copeland and 11 great great grandchildren. Rebecca also leaves 4 special daughters in love, Ms. Bessie Johnson, Ms. Thelma Hodo, Ms. Cynthia James-Johnson, and Ms. Rosemary Warren. A life-long neighbor Mrs. Ruby Dean Summers; A very special friend the late Ms. Elsie Trammell, a host of Nieces, Nephews, Great Nieces and Nephews, Cousins and many friends.
