Mr. Maurice “Joe” Smith, the youngest son of the late Arthur Lee Smith and Sarah Jane Barber Smith, transitioned peacefully at the Wellstar Douglas Medical Hospital in Douglasville, GA on July 31, 2024 at 2:28 a.m. Maurice was born June 30, 1955 in West Point, Harris County GA. He was known as “ Joe” to his family and friends.
Maurice accepted Christ and joined the Mt. Nebo Baptist Church in West Point, GA at an early age, where he attended for many years. He attended Carver High School in Hamilton, GA, following behind his oldest sister, Cora Lee Smith Winston, his youngest sister, Sarah P. Smith Harris and his brother, the late Ernest Smith.
Maurice, being the baby of four siblings, always stayed with his mother and grandmother taking care of them. He never married nor gave mommy any grands. Even though he had some sweethearts, but he always felt it was his duty to take care of mommy and grandma. He made frequent visits to NY visiting his sister, Sarah and his brother, Ernest; to Ohio visiting his sister, Cora or Maryland visiting his uncle, Pal Barber. He loved traveling, but never got too far from home.
Maurice was always an easy going well-liked person and his love for all his family was incredible. After grandma was called home to glory in 1986, he and mommy moved to Alexandria, VA in 1989 to start a new life near his sister, Sarah, who had recently relocated from NY. He was a hard worker and secured employment immediately. In 1997, mommy was called home to glory, he moved back to West Point and re-developed his close relationship with his uncles, Cleve, Willie and Charlie Barber and all his cousins and friends. He wasn’t content living in West Point again, so he moved to Stone Mountain, GA in 1999 with his youngest sister, Sarah and her husband, Bob. He found work the next day, so there he stayed. His specialty were janitorial, custodial and warehouse work. His final job before his illness was with Wal-Mart for many years. We called him Mr. Wal-Mart because he was so dedicated to that company.
He leaves to cherish his memories, two sisters, Cora Winston of Hollansburg, OH and Sarah Harris (Bob) of Stone Mountain, GA; a host of nieces and nephews located in various states like NY, OH,VA, NC, CA, NV GA, AL and many relatives, friends and co-workers who loved him very much.
Funeral Services will be held on Saturday, August 10, 2024 at 1:00 pm EST in the sanctuary of the Mt. Nebo Baptist Church, 2400 Old West Point Road, West Point, GA 31833, with the Rev.
