Mrs. Mattie Ruth Walker, 95, of Lanett, AL, gained her wings into eternal rest on January 9, 2024 at EAMC-Lanier, Valley, AL.
On May 23, 1928, a beautiful baby girl by there name of Mattie, was born to the parentage of the late Jake and Fannie Robinson Blye in Cusseta, Chambers County, Alabama. She was the youngest child of her siblings. Mattie was adored and cherished by them all.
She received her education in the Chambers County School System, attending Lanier High School. Mattie confessed Christ at the tender age of 10 years old and united with the Sardis United Methodist Church and remained a faithful member until God called her home. Mattie served her church as a Sunday school teacher, Superintendent, and Usher board member She attended the Lanett Senior Center, where she and her partner, Betty Travick, were known by many as the Dominos Queens. They won many championships.
Mattie loved her family. She enjoyed attending her family reunions and looked forward to attending each year. She drove her car to the senior center, church, and Piggly Wiggly until she was ninety years old.
On January 9, 2024 at 7:30 p.m. EST at East Alabama Lanier Hospital God saw that she was tired and needed rest. He quietly put his arms around her and lifted her up to rest.
She was preceded in death by her husband Robert Walker; one son; Retired Sergeant First Class, Michael (Marilyn) Brock, whom she adored; six sisters, Sara Mae Philpot, Sylena Smith, Evirt Blye Walker, Fannie Lou Buchanon, Alzater Huguley, Leola Andrews; two brothers, Henry Blye and Jonny Blye.
She leaves to cherish her memories: five daughters, Dorothy(Sylvester) Gray Atlanta, Georgia, Bettye (Tony) Barnes Lanett, Alabama, Vanessa(Marvin) James Jr., Ellerslie, Georgia, Veronica Brock Bonner, Peachtree City, Georgia, Sue (Terrence) Redd, Palmetto, Georgia, son Clinton (Angela) Bell Brock, LaGrange, Georgia; 22 grandchildren, 49 great-grandchildren,15 great-great-grandchildren; a host of nieces and nephews, a special friend Mrs. Bettye Travick, and other relatives and friends.
Funeral Services for Mrs. Mattie Ruth Walker will be held on Tuesday, January 16, 2024 at 1:00 p.m. EST in the sanctuary of the Mt. Hermon Baptist Church, 1610 Magnolia Road, Lanett, Alabama with Rev. Tommie Finley, Officiant, Rev. Alford Booker, Eulogist, Rev. Vernon Carter and Rev. John Flournoy, assisting.
Interment will follow in the Sardis UMC Cemetery, Lanett, Alabama.
Public viewing will be held on Monday, January 15, 2024 from 2:00 p.m. EST until 6:00 p.m. EST at the mortuary.
Arrangements are entrusted to M.W. Lee Mortuary.
