Lula Mae Chappell Roberts departed this life on July 4, 2025.
She was born on August 23, 1916, in Lanett, Alabama, to the late Daniel Chappell and Annie Gates Chappell.
Lula came from a large and loving family. She was preceded in death by her husband, Lamon Roberts; parents, Daniel and Annie Chappell; stepmother, Janie Chappell; ten siblings, Floyd Chappell, Sr., Annie Laurel Chappell Patton, Grover Chappell, Vinnie Chappell Billingslea, Estell Chappell, Daniel Chappell, Jr., Mae Alice Chappell Stephens, Eddie B. Chappell Blount, George Chappell, as well as her twin sibling; she was also preceded in death by her stepsister, Betty Chappell Hill; children, Henry “Bubba” Roberts, Lamon Roberts, Jr., T. J. Roberts, and Catherine Truitt; and great-grandson, Jayvious Gilbert.
Lula met her future husband, Lamon Roberts, when they were neighbors. Both attended Sardis Church, and they married on December 25, 1932. In 1937, they built their family home in Lanett—a home still cherished and lived in by the family today. After attending Church of Christ tent revivals and studying with Brother John Henry Clay, Lamon was baptized, and Lula soon joined him as a devoted member. Together, they played a pivotal role in establishing the North 13th Avenue Church of Christ, which was built across the street from their home in the late 1940s.
Lula and Lamon were blessed with twelve children, one of whom died at birth. After Lamon’s passing in 1954, Lula became the sole provider and caregiver, not only to her children but often to her grandchildren and great-grandchildren as well. She placed her faith in the Lord, upheld strong values in her household, and raised her family within the Church of Christ. She found joy in witnessing milestones such as graduations and weddings and was proud to welcome home her son and grandchildren after their service in the Army, Marine Corps, and Navy. She remained the family’s beloved matriarch until her passing.
Lula loved gardening, cooking, and sewing—skills she mastered with care and pride. Her garden produced fresh fruits and vegetables well into the 1990s. She sewed many of her own and her children’s clothes. Her homemade rolls, biscuits, cakes, and pies became her culinary legacy. Always active and independent, Lula worked in the kitchen at George H. Lanier Hospital. She continued working well into her 90s caring for other families and drove herself, friends, and neighbors until age 97, when the DMV declined to renew her driver’s license—a loss that stayed with her for years.
Lula is survived by seven of her children: George Roberts, Shirley Jackson, Mary Tatum, Rose London, Josephine Turner, Richard (Laneeta) Roberts, and James (Sheila) Roberts; thirty-one grandchildren: Jerome Roberts, Diane Brannon, Michael Roberts, Kary Williams, David Roberts, Cynthia Roberts, Gregory Roberts, Cheryl Roberts, Van Roberts, Angie (George) Evans, Vanessa Jenkins, Loren Whitfield, Joy Roberts-Revels, Theoren (Alicia) Gourdine, Tuesda (Wil) Evans, Jovan Roberts, Andre Roberts, Monique Johnson, Wilma Jackson, Kimberly Jackson, Frederick Tatum, Valerie Tatum, Richard Harris, Gregory Harris, Gary Harris, Jamie Harris, Marcus Turner (Elizabeth), Jacquelyn (Damien) Turner-LeBeouf, Jennifer Turner, Thelonious (Ernest) Hosley, and James (Jameelah) Roberts, Jr.; she is also survived by three stepsisters: Daisey Chappell Kizer, Lou Chappell Potts, and Virginia Chappell Harding; as well as a host of great-grandchildren; and she leaves to cherish her memory a large circle of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives, and dear friends.
