George Lewis “Spunk” Williams was born April 12, 1940 to the late Mcoy Williams Sr. and the late Annie Kate Williams in Troup County, Georgia. He departed this earthly life on September 12, 2023 at West Georgia Hospice, LaGrange, Georgia.
George, as he was affectionately known by family and friends, confessed Christ at an early age and united with the St. John Baptist Church under the leadership of the late Rev. C. C. Cloud .
He received his education in the West Point Public School System where he was a member of the 1958 graduating class of Harrison High School. He was a stand-out basketball player. George enjoyed watching sports .
“Spunk” was self employed. Due to the building of the West Point Dam, the church had to be relocated. The St. John Community Missionary Baptist Church was built by George Williams with the help of Brother Jim Stiggers.
George was preceded in death by his parents; one sister, Katie Ruth Williams and two brothers, Mcoy Williams, Jr., and Leroy Williams.
He leaves to cherish his memories: his loving and devoted wife, Eddie Mae Williams, West Point, Georgia; four brothers,Calvin( Dee Dee)Williams and Bobby(Norma)Williams, Ronald(Peggy)Scott, all of West Point, Georgia, and Donald(Eunice) Scott, Opelika, Alabama; aunts Julia Ruston, Doris(Robert)Robinson both of Buffalo,New York and Nell Fears, Anniston, Alabama; a nephew, just like a son, Victor Williams; a special friend, just like a daughter, Gwennette Ledyard; a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and other relatives and friends whom he loved dearly.
Funeral Service for Mr. Williams will be held on Tuesday, September 19, 2023 at 2:00 p.m. EST in the sanctuary of the St. John Missionary Baptist Church, 2479 County Road 212, Lanett, Alabama with Rev. Eric Dowdell, Pastor, Eulogist,Rev. Gary L. Fanning, Rev. Charles Trammell and Dr. Rod Williams, assisting. Interment will follow in the St. John Cemetery.
Public viewing will be on Monday September 18, 2023 from 2:00 p.m. until 6:00 p.m. at the mortuary
