George Melton Jr. was born to the late George Melton Sr. and the late Annie Gunn Melton on April 14, 1934, in Lanett, Alabama. He departed from this life on July 17, 2026, at his residence.
George attended and graduated in 1954 from the former Lanier High School in Lanett, Alabama.
George was raised Baptist. He first joined Ebenezer Baptist Church at an early age. He later joined Pilgrim Baptist Church under the late Reverend O.D Slaughter in Lanett, Alabama. He was instrumental in building of Pilgrim Baptist Church. As a member he immersed himself in the church including his beloved Sunday school classes. He worked in numerous positions in the church including deacon; treasurer; and sexton.
George was united in marriage to Mae Frances Walker Melton on January 9, 1955. They remained together for 68 years until her death on July 16, 2023. They brought all five of their children up in the church.
He was a patriarch for his family. One of his greatest joys was showing kindness, love and affection to his nieces and nephews after his siblings passed away.
He retired from West Point Stevens in June 1999 after 44 Years of successful service.
George was preceded in death by the following: his wife, Mae Frances Walker Melton; sisters, Catherine Strong, Dorothy Melton, Emma Kate Darden Elie, Edith Melton, Annie Ruth Tibbs; brothers, Otis Melton, Willie Lewis Melton; nieces, Sylvia Sands, Ernestine Grant, Cynthia Madden, Stephanie Tibbs, Sandra Autry, Aries Sands and nephews, Koben Tibbs, Frank Strong, Joseph Melton, William Darden.
George leaves to cherish his memories: son, George H. Melton (Sherry)LaFayette, Alabama; daughter, Teresa Melton Lewis (Aron Sr.) Aiken, South Carolina; sons, Dennis T. Melton, Lanett, Alabama, Steven O. Melton (Gwendella) Jonesboro, Georgia; and Rev. Dr. Ronnie Melton (Carol) Valdosta, Georgia; eight grandchildren and 21great-grandchildren, two great-great-grandchildren; brother-in-law Douglas Lee, Cincinnati, Ohio, sister-in-law, Brenda Lee, Cincinnati, Ohio, and a host of nieces, nephews and other relatives and friends.
