100 years ago, a bundle of joy blessed George and Victoria Lumpkins Marshall. They named him Elijah Marshall.
Elijah Marshall, Sr. was born on February 20, 1925 in Chambers County, Alabama. He departed this life on Wednesday, May 28, 2025 at LaFayette Extended Care Nursing Home in LaFayette, Alabama.
Elijah, Sr. attended school in Chambers County. He accepted Christ at an early age and joined Rehoboth Baptist Church in Valley, Alabama, where he served until his health failed. He was employed by West Point Stevens for a short period of time. He was later employed by L.S. Combs for upwards of 70 years as a brick mason. This job provided Elijah, Sr. to expand his talents in other areas. He was grateful to the Combs family for allowing him the opportunity to do what loved. He often bragged that his brick laying skills are the reasons for the many beautiful buildings in our area.
He had a huge, fun-loving spirit that shown brightly while sporting a wide brim hat and a “sharp” suit and tie. He would often respond when asked how he’s feeling by saying “Like a bug on rug too smooth to move.”
Elijah, Sr. was preceded in death by his parents, the mothers of his children, Catherine Marshall Woody, Willie Mae Holloway and Katherine Jackson Marshall; one daughter, Mary James Holloway; five brothers, Willie, Jimmy Lee, Sam Sr, John and Mack; seven sisters, Essie Mae, Mae Lizzie, Dorothy, Willie May, Mary, Marie and Annie Lee; one grandson, Valentino James, and one granddaughter, Felicia Marshall.
Elijah, Sr. leaves to cherish his many memories, three faithful sons, Elijah (Gloria) Marshall Jr., West Point, Georgia, Norell (Andree) Jackson, Valley, Alabama, and Billy (Mable) Holloway; six daughters, Ruby (Eddie B) Williams, Christine Jackson, Lanett, Alabama, Maria Holloway, Opelika, Alabama, Glenda (Patrick) Sheats, Athens, Georgia, Katie (Keith) Funderburk, Maryland and Kathy Jackson, Columbus, Georgia. He was blessed with 27 grandchildren, 33 great grandchildren and a host of great great- grandchildren, nieces, nephews and friends.
Funeral arrangements by M.W. Lee Mortuary.
