Dorothy R. Gilliam, “Sister”,was born on August 16, 1936 to Lottie and Eddie Lee Gunn in Chambers County, AL. She returned to West Point, GA, as a teenager and met her husband of six-five years, Mr. Tommy Gilliam, Sr. She was a dedicated employee of West Point Stevens for thirty years.
Dorothy or “Sister”, as everyone called her, was the best mother, grandmother, and friend one could have. She enjoyed children and always welcomed those from the neighborhood to her home with a smile and open arms.
Dorothy confessed Christ as her Savior and joined Bethlehem Baptist Church. She later moved her church home to New Harmony C.M.E. under the leadership of Reverend Pollard.
She leaves to cherish her memories: her husband, Tommy Gilliam, Sr.; three daughters, Gabrella Gilliam, Sonya (Richard) Mitchell, Celeste (Curtis) Winston; special niece that she reared as her own, Gaytresha McLemore; four sons, William (Elizabeth) Gilliam, Tommy (Toni) Gilliam, Jr., Christopher Gilliam, and James (Stacie) Gilliam, III; a special stepdaughter, Janice (John) Bandy and a stepson, Joe Coleman, all of West Point, GA. She leaves twenty-two grandchildren and 32 great-grandchildren to carry on her legacy. I'm so happy I received the opportunity to visit you one last time recently. There are so many beautiful memories I have of you. One, there definitely was a lot of butt whopping given out, but I avoided them at all cost(lol). Watching you leave out the house on your way to work to make sure all your household was cared for even caring for your niece and her children all the way from Cincinnati, OH, giving them a place to call home. Your peace begins now. Much love and respect is dedicated to you. DaKenya Gunn

To the family of Dorothy Gilliam (my family), I am deeply sorrowful on her death. Dorothy was a faithful member of New Harmony C.M.E. Church and its Missionary Society. She was a person who you could count on. Her sweet personality and demeanor will always be etched in our hearts.
Dorothy may be absent from this earth; however, she will always remain with you in your hearts. It gives us comfort to know that to be absent from the body is to present with the Lord.
May God continue to keep and bless each of you.
