Our sweet mama, Dorothy Lemerle Birchfield DeLoach Gilmore, left this world on February 17, 2025.
Mom was born May 12, 1934, in Chambers County, to Mae Railey and Grady Birchfield, who
predeceased her.
Also, predeceasing her are her brothers and sisters, JW Birchfield, Cathleen Hand, Junior Birchfield,
Frances Smith, and Laverne Smith. In addition, her husbands, John E. DeLoach and James (Jim) C.
Gilmore predeceased her. Also, her mother-in-law, Lula (Red) DeLoach, who felt Mom was her actual
daughter and supported her with love and help all of Granny’s life, was waiting for her in Heaven.
Surviving Mom are her children, LuAnne D. Berlin and her husband, Craig, and John A. DeLoach and
his wife Ann. She loved her grandchildren Jaime Berlin, Cristi Giguere, Sam Coburn and his wife
Hannah, Lexus Bice and her husband Josh, Harper DeLoach, and Matt Coburn and sweet Tara. She
was lucky enough to see and hold her great grandchild, Jack Harper Bice.
Also surviving her are many loved, loving, and caring nieces, nephews, and their spouses.
Many friends that loved and supported made life so much richer - Dena Edge, Barbara Hilterman, and
Ramona Tant, among so many others. Gail and Jesse Smith took good care of her home and her
needs. Mom’s niece, Meredith Birchfield and husband, Joe Saloom, were always there at a moment’s
notice for Mom, bringing warm food or handling anything that might be wrong, always loving her and
taking such good care of her. Her Farmville Baptist Church family was so important to her and
supported her along in life, for which we are grateful. So many people to thank for all their love and
support - the list would be too long.
Mom had a great life. She was head cheerleader at LaFayette High School, married her high school
sweetheart, enjoyed life in LaFayette and around the South, then married the love of her life and
moved to Texas, where she experienced all that God’s Country has to offer. She got her college degree
in 1986 when she was 52 years old - an accomplishment of which we were all proud.
We thank everyone who loved Mom and supported her along the way. She loved living in Auburn and
enjoying all it had to offer. The best was enjoying lunch at Laredo Mexican Restaurant with friends.
She loved any time she could go out to eat, although she was a great cook.
Although she was small, she was mighty. And, better watch out if she stomped her foot - you were in
trouble. We thank her for all she taught us and the blessed upbringing she gave us.
She will be remembered on Saturday, February 22, 2025, with a visitation at Jeff Jones Funeral Home
in LaFayette, Alabama, 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. and then with a graveside service at Center Baptist
Church, Ridge Grove, at 2:00 p.m.
Thank you for keeping us all in prayer and having a sweet thought of our mama.
