Our beloved mother, Vernell Thomley Matyas, passed away peacefully at home on July 5, 2026. Vernell was born May 3, 1938 in Dothan AL. She is preceded in death by Michael Matyas Jr., husband, Viola (Hudspeth) Burt, mother, Marie Risinger, sister, twin infant siblings Effie Mae and Billy Ray, and her infant twin brother RL.
Vernell is survived by: sister Blondell Ray, brother Bruce Thomley, and her children; Robert Mauldin (Shirley), Lee Mauldin (Kim), Michael Matyas (Bonnie), Catherine Giebenhain, Mitchell Matyas, Lisa Paulauskis (Gregory), Marcia Logan, and Elizabeth Moran (Roman).
She had 21 grandchildren, 32 great-grandchildren, and 3 great-great grandchildren.
Vernell moved to Georgia in 1955, married Michael in 1957, and became part of the community in Harris County for 64 years. She was a member of Pine Mt Valley SDA church for over 60 years and served the church and community by volunteering to feed and clothe those less fortunate, working with the community senior citizen center, and sharing love and compassion to everyone she met. She loved flowers and plants, she loved to sing, read and craft. She loved her family dearly. She loved sharing her testimony of God’s love and was longing for heaven and seeing her Savior Jesus Christ.

Vernell was an amazing and wonderful person to know. She had the most beautiful smile and a heart of gold. She was very caring person and a wonderful friend to everyone she knew. I was honored to know her. Her devotion to her family was unmatched.
