Obituary For Patricia Anne McHale Ryan

A celebration of life to remember Patricia ‘Pat’ McHale Ryan, 76, of Hoschton, is scheduled for Saturday, October 15, 2022 at 2:00 p.m. at Hamilton Mill United Methodist Church, 1450 Pine Road Dacula, Georgia. Family will be greeting attendees beginning at 1:00 p.m. A reception after the service with the family will follow.

Mrs. Ryan passed away Thursday, October 6, 2022, peacefully in her home surrounded by her family after a long battle with cancer.

Born March 13, 1946 in Winter Haven, Florida, she was the daughter of late Elmer and Margaret Winderweedle McHale.

Pat graduated from Winter Haven High School in 1964, and during that time, was awarded Miss FFA Sweetheart for the state of Florida. Upon graduating, she went on to the University of South Florida, graduating in 1968 with a Bachelor of Science in Music Education. She also met her husband of 50 years, John Andrew Ryan, at USF. Pat began her teaching career in Tampa at Chamberlin High School, and continued for eighteen years as a music educator in Hillsborough county, as a traveling music teacher in a number of elementary schools, as well as the primary music teacher at John B. Gorrie Elementary and Mendenhall Elementary.

In 1988, Pat and her family moved to St. Mary’s, Georgia where she continued her career at Crooked River Elementary and St. Mary’s Elementary, being the first full-time elementary music teacher hired for Camden County. In 1990, she was voted Teacher of the Year for the county. She went on to become the chorus teacher at Camden County High School where she built the choral department to a full-time, successful, thriving program. Under her leadership, she took her students on trips to Toronto, Quebec, London, Paris, Disney and various chorus competitions, receiving Superiors in All-State. During this time, she earned her Masters of Education from Troy College, and later, her Specialist in Education for Curriculum and Development from Cambridge College in Boston. She was also certified in both Orff and the Kodály method. Along with her vibrant professional career, she was employed at Kingsland United Methodist Church as the organist.

In 2003, Pat and John moved to Snellville, Georgia and continued teaching at Annistown Elementary. She retired from education in 2012 after a long and rewarding career as a music teacher and choral director for forty-two years.

Pat and John moved to Hoschton, Georgia in 2013. She served alongside John as an active member of Hamilton Mill United Methodist Church, singing in the choir and participating in their Sunday school class as well as Bible studies. Her retirement years were filled with camping, travels overseas to Italy and Japan, and time spent with her children and grandchildren and great-granddaughters. In her life, she was an avid water skier, talented pianist and gifted vocalist, but her greatest love, outside of her faith and devotion to the Lord Jesus Christ, was her deep love of her husband and family.

She is survived by her husband of 50 years, John Ryan of Hoschton, Georgia; son Greg Ryan and daughter-in-law, Carrie of Cornelia, Georgia; son Joshua Ryan and daughter-in-law, Harmony of Juneau, Alaska; son Noah Ryan and daughter-in-law, Christina of Dacula, Georgia; grandchildren Zach Ryan and wife Emily of Duluth, Georgia; Courtney Ryan Cain and husband Brandon of Toccoa, Georgia; Parker Ryan, Davis Ryan, Emerson Ryan and Brooks Ryan of Dacula, Georgia; Saylor Ryan and Drew Ryan of Juneau, Alaska; great-granddaughters Piper Cain and Hallie Cain of Toccoa, Georgia; great-granddaughter on-the-way, Adeline ‘Della’ Eloise Ryan; brother Dennis McHale of St. Petersburg, Florida; sister Judy Lippeatt of West Blocton, Alabama; nieces and nephews and extended family.

Ms.Pat was my chorus teacher at Annistown Elementary 20 years ago. Just randomly thought of her and found this. Very wonderful woman . Always nice and full of energy and wisdom. Thank you for all you've done for me your community.

John, we were so saddened to hear of Ms. Pat's passing. She was truly a woman of honor and integrity. When we worked together with the youth at Kingsland United Methodist Church, I witnessed your devotion to the Lord and a true desire to have a positive influence on those whose lives you touched. This was only paralleled by your devotion to Pat and your family. I know she (and you all) have touched so many lives in an encouraging and Christian manner; the impact of which can never be forgotten. Our prayers are lifted for you and your entire family! May the Lord give you peace and comfort during this time of grief. Debbie and Tom Stewart

I was a colleague of Pat and John in Gwinnett County. My favorite memories of Pat are working with her on the Gwinnett County Honor Chorus music. When Honor Chorus first started, we realized we needed quality vocal recordings for our students and teachers to use during preparation rehearsals. This was years before we had digital recordings, but Pat and John jumped right in and created rehearsal CDs for us with Pat's lovely voice singing through all the different parts. It took a great deal of time, but for Pat, it was a labor of love. She was always smiling and gracious. She will be missed.

Pat will always be one of the shining lights in my memory because of her enthusiasm, positive spirit, talent, and most of all the love she showed to her students. Our children thrived under her direction, and the musical opportunities she provided during their high school years. She (and John) always had BIG ideas and pushed for high standards. I also remember when we were both participating in The Messiah at St. Marys Methodist Church many years ago. Her amazing voice carried the entire soprano section and made us all sound great. She will be missed. My thoughts and prayers go out to John. Their love for each other was always evident, and an inspiration for us all.

John, our hearts are broken to hear of Pat's passing. I know she fought a long battle but now is eternally cured and walking with Jesus. Our love and prayers to you and your family during this time and in the weeks ahead. We will be lifting you up. Sheryl and Danny Brown, Sr.

What an amazing life Mrs. Ryan had! Reading through all that she did and knowing the ways she impacted everyone she met, I can't help but feel so grateful someone like her was in the world. I feel so blessed to have known her (and Mr. Ryan!), and to have had her as my high school chorus teacher. What a voice! I'll never forget her beautiful soprano as long as I live. And the way she loved music and always pushed us to be our best was inspiring. As was her and Mr. Ryan's devotion to each other. I still remember being in her tiny little office in the chorus room and she'd tell us kids to run next door to Mr. Ryan's room and tell him "143". We'd always ask what it meant and she wouldn't say. But then either she caved or someone figured it out - it was the letter numbers for "I love you". To me that just sums up so much of what she was - loving, fun, brilliant... She always had a twinkle in her eye and a bounce in her step. Even though I haven't seen her for many years, I'll always remember her. She was such an amazing woman and I'm just so grateful I got the chance to know her. Sending lots and lots of love to Mr. Ryan and the rest of her family right now.

I'm a former colleague of Pat in Gwinnett County. Her inspiration and enthusiasm for elementary music education made me a better music teacher. She always had a smile and many creative ideas. She loved the children she taught as if they were her own. Her life was a blessing to so many!

Although it's been many years since I have seen and sung with Pat, I cannot ever forget how she blessed my son (Bud Gaskins) and me with her friendship, vocal guidance, angelic voice, Christian witness and precious self. Because of Pat and John, I was given the opportunity to develop my voice for God. Both Pat and John were so generous to our family, and it was a wonderful privilege to sing with both of them. I can only imagine how welcome you must be, Pat, to sing with the eternal angels. Love you forever, Pat! God bless everyone of your family! Deb Cupal

As one of the founding member of our life group, The Salt Shakers, at Hamilton Mill UMC, Pat brought her beautiful smile, cheerful disposition and her extended knowledge of scripture and faith in the Lord Jesus Christ to every meeting! We came to know a bit about her beloved family, as she shared stories. We discovered her great will to live and courage to do whatever was needed to fight the battle with cancer. She was a mighty soul! It has been a blessing to be her friend. Love and prayers continue for her family. Mary Jac Neal

Pat was a beautiful lady who loved the Lord and served him faithfully. Her musical talent was used in service and touched so many. Cheri and I were so blessed to have Pat and John sing at our wedding. Words are not really adequate to express what a blessing she was. Praying for John, Greg, Josh, Noah, and all the family. We love you.

Mrs Ryan was my high school chorus teacher while we lived there for three years (1999-2002). She was my inspiration and the reason I became a music teacher. She loved Jesus and she loved her students so clearly in all she did. I'm so grateful for her and Mr. Ryan. Prayers for her family. Sarah (Hughes) Shuey

We are good friends of Mrs. Patricia Ryan's Son and daughter-in-law, Greg & Carrie Ryan. We never had the pleasure of meeting her... But it is apparent she was a very loved & talented person, and will be missed greatly. Sending our deepest sympathies to the Ryans and all family and friends who are enduring this great loss.

Mrs.Ryan was my coworker and music/chorus teacher to two of my children at Annistown. She's a beautiful and talented lady. She cast both my children in leading roles, and I still love to watch the recordings. Mrs. Ryan put on some amazing performances and I was always impressed at the dance steps she was able to teach the kids after having had surgery herself. I will always love Mrs. Ryan for the impact she had on kids and adults.

Mrs Ryan was always kind, always smiling, and she made the joy of singing even more fun. I always wanted to do my best for her and Mr. Ryan because they were both so very encouraging. You could just tell that she loved every part of teaching Chorus, and every part of leading us on our musical journey, whether it be in the classroom, learning a musical number, a performance, or a state competition. She was SO very amazing all the way around. One of my favorite teachers. I still remember our Advanced Choir my Senior year (1992) at CCHS. We all loved them, Mr. & Mrs. Ryan complimented each other. Their teaching was a reflection of their marriage. They were always in harmony and were always caring. Mrs. Ryan, like I said before, made Chorus even more fun than it already was for me. Our class was one of the first for them, and we didn't get to really go anywhere big, but I feel the roots that she planted there, in that Band Room, grew into the wonderful program that it became, and I was grateful for every minute of every song. I know she's playing a piano and leading a choir of angels in song. Just think what wonderful songs we will be greeted with in Heaven when we get there! Thank you Mrs. Ryan. I had a pretty hard home life at the time, and you never knew it, but your class was always the highlight of my day. :) Johnnah Dixon Crocker, c/o 1992.

Mrs. Ryan had both of my girls in Concert Choir, and Volume One, in Camden County. I chaperoned many trips to Disney as well as Vermont where my daughter got to sing with the VonTrapp family. Mrs. Ryan, was a wonderfully kind and generous woman, and she gave encouragement when needed and was silly with the kids and I never met anyone who didn't love Pat Ryan.

Fly high and I'm sure you will be first in line to sing in Gods choir. It's comforting to know you are no longer in pain and that you will be deeply missed by many. Tracy Stefurak Emily Latham 2002 CCHS concert Choir and Volume One Lindsey Miller 2005 CCHS Concert Choir
