Matthew Grant was a loving father, loyal partner, and the funniest person on Earth. He died surrounded by close family in Athens, GA on May 24, 2023 after a brief illness. He was 50.
Matt was born to June Whitworth and Richard Grant on March 25, 1973, and grew up in his beloved hometown of Andover, MA where he relished being the baby of the family. From an early age he followed the words of his favorite poet Robert Frost and took the road “less traveled by," starting his first of several businesses by the age of 5 selling the contents of his parents’ kitchen to neighbors and passersby.
Matt served in the Naval Reserve, and later became a proud graduate of the University of Georgia. He was a dynamic Social Studies teacher, imparting his love of history and civics to the middle- and high-school students of Elberton and Athens. He was also an entrepreneur and shared his quick wit and colorful language with everyone he met. Matt was loyal, generous, and earnest. He did not care about punctuality, tidiness, or paperwork. He cared about friends, family, and the New England Patriots.
Matt is survived by his son Samuel, partner Kimberly, siblings Andrew, Pete, Debbie, Jackie, and Sharon, many amazing and hilarious nieces and nephews, and one poorly behaved but lovable dog Chuck.
A celebration of Matt’s life will be held on July 3rd at the Winterville Cultural Center, 371 N. Church Street Winterville, GA. Visiting hours are between 2pm and 4pm.
The staff of Central Cremation Services is honored to be selected to provide end-of-life services to the Grant family.

Matt was larger than life and always made me laugh and smile. So many fond memories, especially from freshman year basketball. What a character! The world is definitely a little bit dimmer with Matt gone. Peace and rest my friend.
So full of love, Matt! We had some amazing times together! Mel-F-L, baseball behind the church, getting kicked out of the Smithsonian, Saturday Night Specials, camping in Maine, playing 45s just hanging with our friends in school and being carefree kids. You are loved and missed!
Larger than life, Matt holds a special place in our hearts. We still talk about Mel FL games, playing the part of my son's "Father" in his high school video, trivia games...we're terribly sorry to hear of his passing.

I am so sorry to hear about Matt. We were good friends in high school and all of the fun memories just come flooding back. MelFL and pool parties, Saturday Night Specials, 45's, Southern Cross. All of the Andover folks will know what I'm talking about. Matt was quite a character and he will always hold a special place in my and my family's heart. My mom loved him like a son and my brothers worshipped him like a big brother. RIP Matt. - Mel
