It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Joan Anne Shifflett Kirkland, age 79, of Duluth GA. Joan passed on Sunday night April 12 at Northeast Georgia Medical Center Gainesville after suffering a massive stroke brought on by a brain aneurysm that happened on April 4th. The stroke happened suddenly while she and friends were celebrating the birthday of the love of life, her husband Fred Kirkland. Joan and Fred had just celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary a few weeks before. Everyone that knew them knew how much they loved and cared for each other.
Along with her dear husband Fred
Joan loved her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ and loved studying His Word. She was a long time very active member at North Metro Baptist Church in Hoschton GA. Joan was not only active on Sunday morning with Worship Service and Life Group each week, she loved attending and helping anytime needed with Tuesday 60+ and the Ladies Bible Study on Thursdays. Joan was always so outgoing and full of energy. For many years Joan and Fred were greeters and the first smiles you saw as you entered North Metro on a Sunday morning. Her bubbly personality and smile are already being missed by all that loved her.
She is survived by her beloved husband Fred Kirkland, one sister Shirley Baggett (Virginia) and a brother Ted Shifflett (Virginia).
A Celebration of Life Service will be held on Thursday April 30th at 2PM at North Metro Baptist Church, 1047 Highway 124, Hoschton, GA with Dr Frank Cox officiating.
In lieu of flowers the family request donations be made to North Metro Baptist Church at the address above.
Please do not send flowers to the Cremation Facility.

Fred, I will miss Joan's smile and her vivacious personality. Her face could light up a room and even those who did not know her well were inspired by her spirit. May God bring you peace as we all mourn her loss. Rest assured that she is with our Savior and we will see her again one day. ❤️
Fred, I am so sorry for your loss. When I was transferred into the Richmond Office of FIA, Joan was the first person to greet me. For the next 13 years, I could always count on Joan. She was always so kind to my wife and children. She was a very wonderful and special person. My deepest condolences. Dan Rockwell
