James Edwin Bridges, age 74, of Colbert, Georgia, passed away at his home on Wednesday, January 21, 2026.
Known to family and friends as Edwin, he was born in Athens, Georgia on September 2, 1951, to Mary Emily Armour Bridges and James O. Bridges of Madison, Georgia.
Edwin was a proud member of the Morgan County High School Class of 1970, where he played football and participated in FFA and DCT. He earned the nickname “Bird” for his slim facial features and was well known around the school for his beloved 1957 Chevy, which was even featured in the school yearbook.
After high school, Edwin married his high school sweetheart, Barbara Sue Mason, and together they had two daughters. He later attended Athens Technical College, where he learned the heating and air conditioning trade. Using the skills he gained through his education and years of hands-on experience, Edwin went on to establish his own HVAC business.
Following the end of his marriage to Barbara, Edwin married two more times. His final marriage was to Patricia “Pat” Bridges, who became not only his wife but also his business partner. In the late 1990s, the two opened a restaurant and snack booth at J&J Flea Market, where they also shared a passion for buying and selling goods. Pat preceded Edwin in death in 2008, leaving him a widower.
In addition to his wife, Edwin was preceded in death by his parents.
He is survived by his daughters, Christine Dodson of Eatonton and Rachel Jenkins (Dan) of Buckhead; and his grandchildren, Charles Mitcham and Bailey Dodson, both of Jackson.
The family will hold a private service at a later date.
