Obituary For Douglas Newton

Douglas Newton, 83, of Bogart, Georgia, passed away on June 4, 2024.

Born November 20, 1940, in Greenville, Alabama, he was the son of the late Dollie Marie Phelps Newton and Edward Earl Newton, and the fourth of six Newton children. Douglas attended Greenville High School where he met his wife, Glenda Russell Newton. They were married in 1960. After years of traveling around the Southeast for work, Douglas and Glenda settled in the Bogart area in 1973 where they made a home for their family.

Anyone who knew “Nugget” knew that he truly embodied the phrases: “there’s no such thing as having too much fun” and “work hard, play hard”. He came home many days covered in red Georgia clay, smelling faintly of diesel fuel. He taught his family the value of hard work. With work on the mind, Douglas was also a collector of all things mechanical. He loved working on his equipment, fishing on his pontoon, traveling back to Greenville with his camper to see family and friends, and driving country roads in his truck — which he asked about doing up until his last days.

The most remarkable thing about Douglas was his ability to make others laugh. He was a natural storyteller and entertainer who kept any gathering rolling with laughter. He lived life loud and vivaciously, and our lives will feel quieter without him.

Douglas is survived by his wife, Glenda; his children, Russell Newton (Belinda) and Pam Johnson (Eddie); his grandchildren Amanda Williams (Ross), Cody Newton (Kate), Jake Johnson and Jessie Monroe (Austin); and great-grandchildren Ansley Williams, Hazel Williams, Wyatt Williams and Wynn Newton. He will be greatly missed. His legacy will live on with each day of hard work and every great joke.

If you’d like to remember him, we recommend doing so with a tall glass of milk and a dozen warm Krispy Kreme donuts. To honor his wishes, his family will privately celebrate his life at a later date.
