Carter Funeral Home announces the transition of Mrs. Velma Miles Haslam of Midway, Alabama.
Mrs. Haslam, 92, of the Mt. Andrew Community, slept away peacefully February 28, 2021 at her residence. Celebration of Life Services and Interment will be held Saturday, March 13, 2021 at 1:00 p.m. from the Center Ridge Missionary Baptist Cemetery of the Mt. Andrew Community. Bishop Cornell Nobles, Pastor, God’s Promise Ministries, Montgomery, Alabama, will officiate all services. Pastor Darius J. Moore of the Center Ridge Missionary Baptist Church will deliver the message of triumph.
Public visitation will be held Friday, March 12, 2021 from 2:00 p.m. until 5:00 p.m. at Carter Funeral Home of Union Springs, Alabama. All services and visitations will be conducted exercising prescribed social distancing protocols, including the use of appropriate facial coverings.
Sister Velma Haslam was born on June 15, 1928 in Bullock County, AL to Sam and Queen Miles. She was the eighth of ten children and was the last surviving sibling. Velma was educated in the Bullock County school district. She married Jeff D. Haslam Sr. on October 10, 1946, becoming the Step-Mother to Annie Ola. They migrated to Toledo, OH. And from this union four children were born, Meredith, Marlene, Jeff Jr., and Kimberly.
In 1961, Jeff and Velma moved to Detroit, MI, where he retired from the Detroit Tank Arsenal. Afterwards Jeff and Velma along with the youngest two children, decided to migrate back to their roots in Alabama. While in Alabama, Velma became an active member of Center Ridge Missionary Baptist Church, where she remained dedicated until her final transition. She was also a member of the Eastern Star and the Ladies Aid Missionary Society. Velma worked a number of years with SEASHA, in Tuskegee, AL, successfully selling low income housing and was a very active worker for the Mt. Andrews community.
Preceding her in her home going was: Jeff D. Haslam Sr., husband of 36 years, Meredith D. Haslam, daughter and all of her sisters and brothers.
She leaves to cherish her loving memory: Daughters, Marlene Hobbs, Kimberly (Edward) Jarrett; Son, Dr. Jeff D. Haslam Jr.; Step-Daughter, Annie Ola Haslam; Grandchildren, Tyra, Tobi, Tonya, Terrell, Sonya, Gwen, DeOnna, Len, LaKeith, Daryl, Ericka, Lakeva, Kamilah, Kiera, Whitni; a host of Great Grandchildren, Nieces, Nephews and 1 Great Great Grandchild.
