Mrs. Sallie Mae Holmes, 96, of Union Springs, Alabama transitioned into eternity on October 23, 2020 in Montgomery, Alabama.
Known for her caring and nurturing spirit, Mrs Holmes will be truly missed.
Celebration of Life Services and Interment will be held Friday, October 30, 2020 at 11: 00 am from the Mt. Zion Missionary Baptist Cemetery.
The message of triumph will be delivered by Pastor Henry Streeter of the Hayes Hill and New Mt. Pleasant Missionary Baptist Churches.
Public visitation will be held Thursday, October 29,, 2020 from 2:00 pm until 5:00 pm at Carter Funeral Home of Union Springs, Alabama.
All services and visitations will be conducted exercising prescribed social distancing protocols. Facial coverings for all attendees are mandated per an executive order of the Governor of the State of Alabama.
Sallie Mae Holmes was born February 17, 1924 in Midway, Alabama to the late Willie Smith and Lizzie Allen. She confessed Christ at an early age and joined Hayes Hill Baptist Church in Midway, Alabama under the leaderships of Rev. Pritchett.
She was united in Holy matrimony to the late Elijah Holmes, Sr. Sallie Mae loved working with her flowers. She was avid quilter and made quilts for the family every year.
She retired from Wayne Farms after many years of service. Sallie Mae has loved and taken care of so many people through the years. She as known by so many names. Everyone that met her and loved her had their own special name for her. She was known as “Mommy, Granny, Ma, Grandmother, Grandma Sallie and First Grandma.” She would always know who she was talking to based off what she was called.
Sallie Mae leaves to cherish her memories: six children, Lee Oscar (Lillie) Smith, Birmingham, AL, Elijah (Minnie) Holmes, Jr., Atlanta, GA, Elizabeth Swain, Atlanta, GA, Betty (Jesse) Calloway, Ellenwood, GA, Demectric (Toshanetta) Holmes, Conyers, GA, and Sheila (Gregory) Holmes, Birmingham, AL; five sisters-in-law, Lillie Mae Holmes, Union Springs, AL, Catherine Kennedy, Haines City, FL, Lue Ellen Dawson, Babson Park, FL, Essie Mae Ponder, Baldwin, MI and Lula Mae Simpson, Windsor, NY; a cousin that she was raised with, Ella Mae Simon, Birmingham, AL; along with a host of grands, great-grands, great-great grands and greatgreat-great grands; she remained extremely close to three children that she raised from babies, Precious Avery, La’Sadria Robinson and Kendarius Robinson; special friends, Ramona Robinson, Mary Avery, Eula Holmes and Richard Buford; and a special niece that loved her, First Lady Debra Skanes, Birmingham, AL.
