With humble respect, Carter Funeral Home announces the transition of Mrs. Josephine Baker, 74, of Union Springs, Alabama on Saturday, September 23,2017.
Born, September 26,1942, Mrs Baker passed away peacefully while surrounded by her loving family.
Celebration of Life Services will be held Saturday, September 30, 2017 at 1:00 pm from the sanctuary of the Elizabeth Baptist Church, Aberfoil Community, Rev. Hawthorne Reed.Pastor.
Interment will follow in the Elizabeth Baptist Cemetery.
Mrs. Baker will lie in repose at the church one hour prior to Celebration of Life Services.
Visitation for family and friends will be Friday, September 29,2017, from 2:00 pm until 7:00 pm at Carter Funeral Home.
Josephine Baker was born September 26, 1942 in Bullock County Alabama to the late T. L. Peebles and Ida Mae Anderson. She was the sixth (6) of 12 children. She accepted Christ as her savior and was baptized at the family church: “Elizabeth Missionary Baptist Church”. She discontinued her schooling at a young age to work and help provide for her family. At the age of 18, she met and married her soulmate, Tommy L. Baker, Sr. Later they had four boys: Tommy Jr., John, James and Charles. When Charles was a baby, Josephine moved her family to Detroit, Michigan, where she worked at Chrysler for six years. She later moved back to Union Springs, rejoining her sisters and brothers. Josephine spent most of her time helping others, whether they were family or friends. She always lent a helping hand.
Josephine was preceded in death by her husband, Tommy L. Baker, Sr., and two of her brothers: Johnny Lee Peebles and Willie Ben Peebles,
She leaves to cherish her memories, her children: Annie Seal (Kenneth) McNeil of Tuskegee, AL., Tommy Lee (Tracy) Baker, Jr. of Jacksonville, FL., John Louis (Henri) Baker of Detroit, MI., James Edward (Janine) Baker of Portland, Tennessee, Charles Anthony (Quishawndra) Baker and one special granddaughter: Josephine Louise Baker, all of Union Springs, AL.; three sisters: Mary Ford, Shirley (Johnny) Coleman of Union Springs, AL., and Annie Dotson of Birmingham, AL.; six brothers: Willie (Lynn) Peebles, Sr., Johnny (Mable) Peebles of Columbus, GA., Clarence (Gloria) Peebles, Millard Peebles, James Peebles of Union Springs, AL., and Thomas (Shirley) Peebles of Detroit, MI.; one brother-in-law: Clemmie (Veronica) Baker; three sisters-in-law: Ethel Borders, Annie Grace (Joe) Youngblood, all of Union Springs, AL., and Ola Jackson of Detroit, MI.; two special sisters-in-law: Costello and Mary Baker. She also leaves behind 17 grandchildren including Toccara Stewart, 24 greatgrandchildren, along with a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, in-laws and friends, including, her many home away from home friends: Arcadia/Mackinaw Detroit Family.
