Carter Funeral Home announces the restful transition of Mrs. Betty Jean Shepherd of Union Springs, Alabama. Mrs. Shepherd, 70, peacefully transitioned into eternity November 8, 2021, at her home while surrounded by the love and care of her family.

The Commemoration of Life will begin with a public visitation, Friday, November 12, 2021, from 2:00 pm until 5:00 pm at Carter Funeral Home.

The Farewell Celebration at Graveside will be held Saturday, November 13, 2021, at 11:00 am from the Mason Cemetery. Rev. Dr. Sidney D. Jernigan, Jr, Pastor of the Union Hill Missionary Baptist Church will deliver the message of comfort and strength.

All visitations and services will be conducted exercising prescribed social distancing protocols and all attendees are encouraged to utilize appropriate facial coverings.

Betty Jean Shepherd was born on January 13, 1951 in Union Springs, AL to Effie Mae Allums and the late Hartney Williams. She was educated in Bullock County and graduated from Carver High School in the Class of 1969. She went on to further her educational journey by receiving a degree in Business from Southern Union Community College.

She was united in holy matrimony on April 23, 1970 to the late Joseph Lee Shepherd, Sr. They honored their vows until his untimely demise on February 12, 1995.

She confessed her life to Christ at an early age where she attended St. Luke Baptist Church until her health began failing. She departed this earthly life on November 8, 2021 in the comfort of her home.

She is preceded in death by her husband, Joseph Lee Shepherd, Sr.; father, Hartney Williams; step-father, Dive Baskin who raised her as his own; grandmother, Mary Allums; siblings, Marion and Melvin Allums; and father-in-law, Joseph Stewart.

She leaves to cherish her loving memories four devoted children: Joseph Lee (Crystle) Shepherd, Jr., Montgomery, AL; Richard Bernard (LaTarsha) Shepherd; Keesha Lynette Shepherd; Tawanda Shepherd-Hill, Union Springs, AL; a loving and devoted mother, Effie Mae Baskin, Union Springs, AL; mother and father-in-law, Lille Mae and Henry James Fowler, Union Springs, AL; five sisters: Jackie Stewart, Philadelphia, PA; Linda Allums, Salt Lake City, UT; Mary Ann Allums, Joanne Allums, Union Springs, AL; Philissa Baskin, Philadelphia, PA; four brothers: Clinton (Sheryl) Allums, James Edward Allums, Salt Lake City, UT; Danny (Ashley) Allums, Birmingham, AL; Kenith (Paula) Baskin, Houston, TX; ten grandchildren: Deondrea (Courtnie) Shepherd, Prattville, AL; Jamarcus Shepherd, Union Springs, AL; Le’Markis (Caylin) Hill, Fairbanks, Alaska; Deonika Shepherd, Arriyon Caldwell, Amarion Hill, Kylie Shepherd and Morgan Shepherd, Union Springs, AL; Trenton Shepherd and Tyson Shepherd, Montgomery, AL; five great grandchildren: Londyn Shepherd, Union Springs, AL; Camden Shepherd, Prattville, AL; Jadan Shepherd, Union Springs, AL; Cayson Mahdi; Columbus, GA; Skylar Hill, Fairbanks, AK.; six sisters-in-law: Annie Calloway, Gazette Pearson, Queen Ester Stewart, Pearlie Stewart, Union Springs, AL; Annie Stewart-Davis, Patsy Peterson, Haynes City, FL; four brothers-in-law: Jimmie Stewart, John Henry Stewart, Jonas Stewart, Anthony Stewart, Union Springs, AL.
