Mary Marlene Sharpe

08/13/1936 - 02/21/2026

Mary “Marlene” Brooks Sharpe, a faithful servant of the Lord, devoted mother, grandmother, educator, and community leader, entered into eternal rest on February 21, 2026, at the age of 89. She was born on August 13, 1936, in Lanett, Alabama, to the late Leroy Denson Brooks and Mary Cue Brooks.

Marlene was a woman whose life reflected her deep love for God and her commitment to serving others. She resided in Columbus, Georgia for many years, where she became a cherished presence in her church, schools, and community. From a young age, she was energetic and athletic, playing basketball in school and later becoming an avid bowler. Bowling remained a lifelong passion; she competed in leagues and traveled across the country to tournaments, forming lasting friendships along the way.

Her pursuit of education and excellence was unwavering. Marlene earned a Bachelor’s degree in Health and Physical Education with a minor in English Education from Alabama State University. She continued her studies, obtaining a Master’s degree from Georgia State University and an Educational Specialist degree in English Education from Troy State University. Teaching was her calling and her joy. The majority of her distinguished career was spent in the Muscogee County School District, where she poured love, discipline, and encouragement into generations of students. She believed in the potential of every child and found great fulfillment in shaping young lives.

Service was the theme of Marlene’s life. She was a dedicated and faithful member of Holsey Chapel CME Church, where she served on numerous programs and, on several occasions, as Chairperson of the Women’s Day Program. Her faith guided her actions, and she freely shared wisdom, encouragement, and prayer with all who crossed her path.

On May 5, 1958, Marlene became a proud member of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Incorporated. She served with distinction and leadership for many decades on the local, regional, and national level, remaining active until recent years. She also contributed her time and leadership to the National Pan-Hellenic Council (Columbus, Georgia), the National Association of Negro Business and Professional Women’s Clubs, and served as President of the Columbus Community Center. Marlene was a loyal member of the Alabama State University Alumni Association and remained deeply connected to her alma mater.

In retirement, her spirit of service and curiosity carried her across the world. She traveled to Africa twice, as well as to Australia and Europe, embracing opportunities to serve while learning about cultures abroad. Her life reflected both a servant’s heart and a love of discovery.

Above all, Marlene loved the Lord with her whole heart and lived her life as a testament to His grace. She adored her family and was fiercely devoted to them. She treasured her son, Michael; her daughter, Michelle; and her beloved granddaughter, Aleisha. She was a proud and loving mother and grandmother—protective, encouraging, and always present. She would go to battle for those she loved and stood as a pillar of strength and wisdom for her family.

Mary Marlene Sharpe leaves to cherish her loving memory: one son, Michael L. Sumrall; one daughter, Michelle L. Sumrall; one granddaughter, Aleisha Marlene Sumrall; three sisters-in-law, Chessie Jones, Patricia Clark (James), and Dorothy Dilworth (James); and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives, former students, church family, sorority sisters, colleagues, caregivers, and friends who will miss her deeply.

Though she has departed from this earthly life, her legacy of faith, service, leadership, and love will live on in all who were blessed to know her.
