Tommie Gilliam Sr. was born on April 2, 1930, to Estelle and James Gilliam in West Point, Georgia. He was called home to be with the Lord on October 16, 2025, at Wellstar Hospital in LaGrange, Georgia.

Tommie confessed Christ as his Lord and Savior at an early age and joined New Harmony C.M.E., under the leadership of Reverend Pollard.

“Tommie”, as he was known to everyone, received his formal education in the West Point City School System in West Point, Georgia. He met and married the love of his life; of sixty-five years, Dorothy Gilliam, in 1955 and they were blessed with seven children. He spent his life working in his passion for carpentry until he retired to be a “shade tree mechanic” at his home.

Tommie was the best father, uncle, grandfather, and great-grandfather one could ask for. He was a provider, a man of great strength, and a man true to his word. He loved watching wrestling with his wife and grandkids, doing word search puzzles, and reading his bible. He was the original “O.G” of West Point.

He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Dorothy; his parents and siblings, Mozelle, Inez, Gabrella, Thelma, Anita, Bessie, James, Horace, and Charles; and two great-grandchildren, Jaliaya and Londyn.

Tommie leaves to cherish his memories: four daughters, Janice ( the late Johnnie) Bandy, Gabrella Gilliam, Sonya (Richard) Mitchell, and Celeste (Curtis) Winston; a special niece, he reared as his own, Gaytresha McLemore; five sons, Joe Coleman, William (Elizabeth) Gilliam, Tommy (Toni) Gilliam, Jr., Christopher Gilliam, and James (Stacie) Gilliam III; his loving brother, Wilbert (the late Hattie) Gilliam; twenty-two grandchildren and thirty-seven great-grandchildren to carry on his legacy; leaves behind his special companion, “Bella”, who has stuck with him through thick and thin; a special cousin, Albert Gilliam Jr., and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
