Donald Newton Murray, 93, of West Point, Georgia, passed away peacefully at his home on Monday, September 15, 2025.
Born on March 15, 1932, in Miami, Florida, Don was the only child of Ivey Lee and Vega Lee Murray, both devoted teachers. His family moved often during his early years, but he always considered West Point home. A proud graduate of West Point High School, Class of 1951—the Red Devils—he went on to attend Georgia Tech, graduating in 1954. While at Tech, he served as treasurer of the Pi Kappa Alpha fraternity, played saxophone in the marching band, and even participated in ring gymnastics.
In June of 1954, Don married the love of his life, Farris Jane Mize, beginning a marriage that would span 71 years. A proud veteran, Don served his country in the United States Air Force before beginning a long and varied career. His professional path included work with Stockholm Valve & Fittings in Birmingham, AL; West Point Foundry, where he contributed to the development of the Warper; and West Point Pepperell, where he conducted time studies in the mills. Always a leader and communicator, Don was active in Toastmasters, and his entrepreneurial spirit later led him to establish both a security system company and a travel agency.
Don’s hobbies reflected his curiosity and joy in life: building and flying model airplanes, fishing, working crossword puzzles, and traveling extensively—particularly on cruises around the world with Jane.
Don was a Deacon at Springroad Christian Church and enjoyed the fellowship, especially with his Sunday school class.
We would also like to thank Diane Joyner for her love and support with the caregiving for both Don and Jane for the past few years.
He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Jane, in June 2025. He is survived by his daughters, Marie Murray Givhan (Andy) and Lee Murray Carter (Travis); his grandson, Dr. Samuel Webb (Dr. Hillari); and four great-grandchildren, Michael, Christopher, Winter, and Harvey.
A visitation at Valley Point Funeral Home will be held on Friday September 26th, 3:00 PM ET, followed by a funeral service in the chapel at 4:00 PM ET.
Memorial contributions may be made to Chattahoochee Hospice in Don’s memory.
The staff at Valley-Point Funeral Home & Cremation is honored to serve the Family of Mr. Donald N. Murray.
