Ms. Mattie Ruth Gibson, a resident of Valley, AL, died Friday, May 23, 2025 at St. Francis Hospital, Columbus, GA.
Funeral Services are scheduled for Saturday, May 31, 2025 at 1:00 P.M. (EST) from St. Stephens C.M.E. Church, 2427 Columbus Road, Valley, AL, Rev. Larry Threatts, Pastor/Officiating and Rev. Bradley Gibson, Eulogist.
Interment will follow in Fairview Cemetery, 1335 River Road, Valley, AL. Davis Memorial Mortuary of Valley directing.
Public Viewing is scheduled for Friday, May 30, 2025 from 3:00 p.m. until 6:00 p.m. (EST) at Davis Memorial Mortuary Chapel.
Ms. Mattie Ruth Gibson was born February 9, 1937, to the late Mr. Charlie Jefferson and Ms.
Thelma Gibson in Lee County, Alabama.
She confessed Jesus Christ at an early age and joined St. Stephens C.M.E. Church where she was
a faithful member until her death.
Mattie Ruth attended Flint Hill School in Salem, Alabama. She was employed with West Point
Pepperrell in Valley, Alabama for several years. She was an active member at The Valley Senior
Citizens Center. Mattie Ruth loved GOD and knew that she would not have made it far in life
without HIM. She loved going to church and listening to gospel music. She enjoyed her life to
the fullest. Her favorite activities included cooking, being a caregiver, reading the Bible, playing
dominoes and cards, and doing puzzles. She was a frequent traveler with the Valley Senior
Citizens Center and the Bradshaw Library Travelers’ Group.
Mattie Ruth was a very humble servant and did not complain. Anything someone asked her to
do, she was willing to do it even if she didn’t feel it. She loved spending time with her family and
believed that family was important. Although she was not a biological mother, she was blessed
by God to not only be a caretaker but also a “mother figure” for her family and their children.
Mattie Ruth truly loved children and they loved her in return.
She was preceded in death by: her parents, Thelma Gibson Watts and Charlie Jefferson; her
step-father, John Willie Watts; brothers, Dewey (Willie Gene) Gibson, Sammy Lee Ingram,
and Willie Charles Watts; her cousin who was as a sister, Christine Gibson; and sister, Bernice
Watts. On May 23, 2025, at St. Francis Hospital in Columbus, Georgia, GOD called her name,
and she gained her wings.
Mattie Ruth is survived by: her cousins that she helped reared, Laverne Gibson (Rogers)
Houston, Valley, AL, Willie Earl (Dorothy) Gibson, Kathleen, GA, Kenneth (Denise) Gibson,
Warner Robins, GA and Talanda Carter, Hope Mills, NC; sister, Hattie Pearl Johnson, Auburn,
AL; her dear cousin and caretaker, Takeshi LeShun Gibson, Valley, AL; and, a host of nieces,
nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends.
Funeral Services are to be announced by Davis Memorial Mortuary of Valley.
