MELVIN LANCASTER, affectionately known as “Stick” to some of his close friends was born on February 19, 1933, in Chambers County, Alabama to the parents of Mr. Dooly “Jack” Lancaster and Mrs. Sally Huguley Lancaster. He departed this earthly life on November 10, 2024, at his home in West Point, Georgia.
Melvin made his professional life working in the wood timber business. During his working years the wood timber was known as pulpwood. He had the reputation of being a great chain-saw expert. It was said that he could cut a tree down in close quarters and that tree would fall exactly where he said it would without any assistant. Melvin had an excellent career working in the wood industry where he served for over 50 years.
In 1954 Melvin married the love of his life Shirley Booker they were United in Holy Matrimony to begin their lives together.
Melvin Lancaster was beloved throughout the West Point and Vally communities and during his long and industrious life he never met a stranger.
Stick was a man that enjoyed life to the fullest; he loved the great outdoors. He found immense pleasure beating you up in a game of dominoes, especially those who though they could play. They found out fast maybe they needed a little more practice. He enjoyed hanging out on the weekends with his friends telling and listing to the guys tell their stories and jokes. The most favorite thing he enjoyed was watching old Western movies and TV shows, a life well lived.
He was preceded in death by his loving wife, Shirley Booker Lancaster; his brothers, Dooly Lancaster, Albert Lancaster, Isaac Lancaster; his sisters, May Glaze, Linda Henderson, Penny Moore.
He leaves to cherish his memory: Drake Brooks, his beloved grandson, Anchorage, Alaska; great grandchildren, Shernyence Steve, Vyneshya Steve, Anchorage, Alaska, great great grandchildren, Lavenda Mack, Violet Steve, Nazier Drake, Victor and Antonio Cruz, Anchorage, Alaska; sisters: Sally Keizer, West Point, Georgia, Eliza Ann Brown, Opelika, Alabama; devoted nephew, Frank McQueen, Hinesville, Georgia; nephew, George Bailey, Phoenix, Arizona; nieces, Rosa Varner, Dallas, Georgia, Rose Tandoh, Kumasi, Ghana, Jackie Lancaster. Opelika, Alabama, Silvia Lancaster, Detroit, Michigan , and a host loving family and friends.
Graveside Services for Mr. Lancaster will be held on Tuesday, November 19, 2024 at 3:00 p.m. ET in the Greenwood Baptist Church Cemetery, 4829 Veterans Memorial Parkway, Lanett, AL 38683 with Bishop Donald Lancaster, Eulogist.
Public viewing will be held on Monday, November 18, 2024 from 2:00 p.m. until 6:00 p.m. at the mortuary.
