Christopher “Chris” Anthony Stephens, age 66, passed away on Sunday, August 18, 2024, at St. Francis Hospital in Columbus, GA.

Chris was born on August 12, 1958, in Jersey City, New Jersey, to the late Evelyn Johnson Payne and George Stephens. From the age of 2 until 12, he was lovingly raised by his maternal grandmother, Ora Lee Garman, in Perry, GA. Chris attended New Hope Elementary School before moving to Kansas City, Missouri, where he attended high school. Chris joined the US Army in January 1978. After serving in the Army, Chris relocated to Columbus, GA, and later settled in Albany, GA. In Albany, he worked at Hamby Chevrolet and DJ’s Quick Lube and Car Wash for over 20 years.

Chris loved his family and enjoyed family gatherings. He was known for his fun-loving
personality. He had a passion for watching cowboy shows and sports.

Chris was preceded in death by his beloved brother, Wendell "Pee Wee" Johnson, who passed away in January 2024. He is survived by his two sons, Christopher Stephens Jr (Katina) of Kansas City, Missouri, and Adrian Lumpkin of Albany, GA; his daughter, Kinley Brown of Albany, GA; a nephew, Jarmaine Whitest (Jennifer) of Warner Robins, GA, two nieces, Angela “Sweetie” Johnson and Isabella Johnson both of Kansas City, Missouri, a special friend, Johanna Brown of Albany, GA; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and other relatives and friends.

A Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday, August 31, 2024, beginning at 1:00 PM at Progressive Funeral Home Chapel, 4235 St. Mary’s Road, Columbus, GA.
