Ms. Mattie Ruth “Ruth” Sledge ,76, of Atlanta, GA, formerly of Lanett, AL, transitioned on Sunday, August 11, 2024 at Pheobe Putney Memorial Hospital, Albany, GA.
Mattie Ruth Sledge, affectionately known as “Ruth”, was born on January 16th to Mary Lee Welch and Ethan Bonner of Lanett, Alabama, in 1948.
She began her education within the Lanier School System and later graduated from Washington High School, after migrating to Atlanta, Georgia in 1964. Mattie sought to further her education by attending beauty school and obtaining her cosmetology license. Though she had many niches and gained experience in varying sectors, she was always known to be a hardworking woman and worked over thirty years at General Motors before becoming a retiree in 2008.
Throughout her life, Mattie was a beloved mother, nurturing grandmother, dependable sister, aunt, and loyal friend to many. Anyone can attest that Mattie was known to be on the go! She could always be found shopping, spending time with family and friends, traveling the states, and having a great time out with the “Dirty Dozen” and “Just for Fun” crew. You could even find her two stepping at ‘Wine Down Wednesday’s” to giving God the honor and praise at “Praise in the Park” every year. That was the duality of Mattie Ruth. She knew how to have fun but would always give God his glory. Serving across multiple ministries as a member of Wings of Faith in Atlanta, Georgia, Mattie, was known to give God the loudest praise beating her tambourine in worship every Sunday when she was in attendance.
Even as we bid farewell to Mattie, the family finds comfort in knowing that Mattie lived a life devoted to Christ and that her spirit of love, compassion, and toleration for no-nonsense would live on in those that were fortunate to experience her great soul.
Mattie was preceded in death by her mother, Mary Lee Welch; father, Ethan Bonner; sister, Julia Davis and brother Gilbert Welch.
Mattie is survived by her son, Antonio Sledge (Charlanda) of Albany, Georgia; granddaughter, RaShaunnah Sledge, and great-grand daughter, Chyenne Dobbs, of Atlanta, Georgia; sisters, Mary Ethel ‘Mae Ethel’ Floyd and Iola Welch, of Lanett, Alabama, and along with a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
