Obituary For Freda Hayes

Freda Hayes passed away peacefully on October 6, 2023 at East Alabama Medical Center. She was born in Langdale, Alabama on December 22, 1956 to the late Fred and Betty Sue Colley. Freda was a life-long resident of Valley. She lived on Moore’s Creek in Valley as a child and reminisced often about the creek. She would tell stories of fishing, swimming, and catching crawdads. In her adult life, Freda worked in the textile industry at Lanier Mill for over twenty years where she met her husband, Charles, and after closing of the plant worked at Lanett Mill. Upon closure of the mills in the area, she was a manager at Dollar General in Lafayette and Valley until her retirement.

Freda was a loving mother and grandmother and a dear friend to many. She was very family oriented and her grandchildren meant everything to her. She loved going to Pine Mountain to eat barbeque and having a leisurely drive on a Saturday afternoon or to the Appalachian Mountains for vacation. She was an avid Alabama football fan and would argue with you about HER Nick Saban and HER Roll Tide. Freda was a lifelong pet owner and always had her three fur babies alongside her. Her cats Binks and Saban and her dog Pup will miss her.

She is survived by her husband of thirty-six years, Charles and three children. Daughter Kristy Richardson (Jason) of Valley and sons Steven Hayes (Jennifer) of Valley and Joseph Hayes of West Point. She is also survived by three grandchildren, Kinsley and Kailey Richardson and Tyler Hayes. Freda is also survived by her sisters Suzanne Langford (Lamar) of Hendersonville, NC, and Sherry Garnett (Steve) of Union Springs, AL as well as one brother, Freddie Colley of Valley. Survivors also include special cousins Patricia Cook (Rodney) and Jackie Colley (Tedric), Mother-in-law Laverne Dawson, Brothers-in-law Tony and Tim, aka Bubba, Hayes (Dana) and Uncle Muller Copeland whom she loved fishing with in his pond. She is also survived by special friends Mike and Ragene Duffie along with Jimmy and Debra Rutledge and other family and friends.

Funeral services for Mrs. Hayes will be held on Tuesday, October 10th at 11:00 AM EST at Bluffton Funeral Services in Lanett, Alabama with Reverend Steve Garnett officiating. Burial will be at Fairfax Cemetery.
