Larry Jerome Townsend

Mr. Larry Jerome Townsend passed away on Wednesday, June 1, 2022 at the age of 70 in Columbus. He was born on August 25, 1951 in Hastings, FL.

Larry Jerome Townsend departed this earthly life peacefully on June 1, 2022. He was the son of Willie Townsend and the late Johnnie Mae Townsend. He was the first of seven children born to their union. Larry was preceded in death by his mother, wife (Jean) and sister (Hazel).

Larry attended Douglas Anderson High School and Wolfson High School in Jacksonville, Florida. Afterwards, he joined the United States Army where he served honorably for 20 years. Larry earned the Bronze Star Medal for valor in the Vietnam War and other medals before he retired as a Staff Sergeant from the Army in1988. After retiring from military service, he began a career with the General Services Administration at Fort Benning, Georgia where he worked for 20 years before retiring in 2008. In his last employment, he worked in Security before he retired in 2019.

Larry was a car enthusiast and enjoyed driving to his hometown of Jacksonville to visit family, the beaches and other places of interest. He enjoyed watching a variety of sports, especially auto racing, football, and basketball. He was a cyclist and would ride his bicycle on trails and parks in Georgia. Larry lived and enjoyed a full life. Toward the end of his life, after a battle with cancer he was a man at peace. He said, “I’ve had a good life. I can’t complain.”

To cherish his many memories, Larry leaves his father, Willie Townsend; Sisters: Betty Townsend Lee, of McDonough, GA; Patsy Townsend and Brothers: Glen Townsend, Calvin Townsend, Terry Townsend, Sr., of Miami, FL. Daughter, LaTisha Diggs, of Charleston, SC. Other Relatives: Deborah Townsend, Kevin Townsend, William Antwon Townsend of Jacksonville, FL and Joseph Jackson, Palatka, FL. Nieces; Kristal Lee Gletten, Tamika Townsend, Nephews: Lamarcus Jamaal Lee, Terry Townsend, Jr., several great nieces, great nephews, cousins, and friends.

There will be a visitation for Mr. Townsend on Friday, June 10, 2022 beginning at 12:00 PM in the Chapel of Progressive.

Following that, at 1:30 PM his burial will take place at Ft. Mitchell National Cemetery.
