Obituary For Charles Larry Phillips

Mr. Charles Larry Phillips 77, of Lanett, Alabama passed away Tuesday September 14, 2021 at his home under Chattahoochee Hospice care after an extended illness.

He was a member of the LaFayette Heights Baptist Church in LaFayette, he worked in the trucking industry all of his adult life and retired from West Point Stevens after 30 years of service when the company closed. He went on to get a 2 year degree at Southern Union State Community College in heating & air and graduated at the age of 65. He then worked part-time at the West Point Foundry. Larry loved to socialize and meet people from all walks of life. If he saw someone he didn't know he would approach them and strike up a conversation and after only a short conversation would know pretty much their life history. He was genuinely interested in that person's life. He loved trips to the Waffle House where he met lots of those people and was jokingly known as the Mayor of Waffle House.

Graveside services will be held Friday September 17, 2021 at 2PM (CT) at the LaFayette City Cemetery with the Rev. Paul Howard officiating.

Visitation will be held at graveside shortly after the service.

Larry is survived by his Wife of 56 years Avie Phillips, 4 Children Charles M. Phillips (Toni), Steve Phillips (Amy), Beth Miller (David), and Amanda Phillips, 10 Grandchildren and 6 Great Grandchildren, his Brother Ray Mitchell Phillips (Rose), and his Sister Kay Ingle (George), many Nieces & Nephews, Aunts and Cousins. Surrogate family members include Tim and Reba Sanders and Tim and Debra Parson.

He was preceded in death by his Parents Ray & Lois Phillips, and his Twin Brother Harry (Cougar) Phillips.

In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to LaFayette Heights Baptist Church.

My favorite memories of Larry are when he would do Elvis impersonations and walking after he would eat a meal. Daddy would fall asleep and Larry would walk. I can hear him now saying, "thank you, thank you very much" in that deep Elvis voice. I know y'all will miss him. He was loved by so many. Good bless you all.

Larry was probably the best friend l had. We cooked stew together, had dinner almost every day at Sues Chick. We had a table that had been christened "THE TABLE OF KNOWLEDGE". After the lay off we enrolled in Southern Union and in 2010 Amanda,Larry, and myself graduated from Southern Union.

I'm sure he's hugging Mrs. WillaDean right now! We love you all so much, and we'll remember him with every blueberry we pick.

I was a line haul dispatcher, Larry was a local so I never dispatched Larry, would see him all the time on the dock and we would talk. I know his name at WPS was listed as Charles, I must have known that because I would always call him CLP. I recall seeing him when he and Sammy were going to school studying A/C and joking about being an A/C repairman,he said he and Sammy were not going in an attic or under a house and we would have a laugh. I saw him one time and I think he was with an older person he was taking the man shopping, Larry was a good and friendly person. I have met his son that works in Lanett at the tag dept., he was also nice and helpful. I know Larry will be missed, I am glad to have known Larry. LOVE to the family! Frank and Winnie Gaither
