Obituary For Leila T. “Tillie” Cumbee

Mrs. Leila T. “Tillie” Cumbee, 91, of LaFayette, Alabama died Tuesday, February 6, 2018 at the LaFayette Nursing Home.

Funeral services will be held Thursday, February 8, 2018 at 11 a.m. at LaFayette First Baptist Church with the Rev. Jimmy Allen officiating.

Burial will follow at the LaFayette City Cemetery.

Visitation will be held at the church one hour prior to the service at 10 a.m.

Mrs. Cumbee was born on June 18, 1926 in Mississippi and attended school there. After marrying and coming to Alabama, she was a long-time employee of West Point Pepperell at the Shawmut Mill. After retiring, she enjoyed traveling to parts of the U.S. with her husband and often other family members. She was also known as “Mamma C” to the many children in the LaFayette area when she and her husband, Charles, provided daycare for many years.

She is survived by daughters Phyllis Langley (Felton), Charline Hand (Mike), sister Elsie Read, grandsons Kevin Hand and Kenneth Hand (DeAnna), great grandsons Kade Hand, Kyle Hand, Landon Hand, Cohen Hand, and great granddaughter Addison Hand.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 74 years, Charles Cumbee, mother Kate Thompson, father Lee Thompson, and sisters Clara Jarvis, Edna Cook and Stella Stewart.

Flowers will be accepted or memorials may be made to LaFayette First Baptist Church Building Fund, 201 South LaFayette Sstreet LaFayette, Alabama 36862.
