Obituary For Carlton “Beanie” Morris

Carlton “Beanie” Morris, 94, joined his predeceased family members on December 7, 2017 in East Alabama Medical Center – Lanier Nursing Home in Valley AL.

Mr. Morris lived the past two years with his daughter in West Point, GA, but called Augusta, GA his home for over 75 years. Mr. Morris was born in Columbus, GA on June 7, 1923 to the late Roy Collins and Ruth Daniel Morris. In 1939 at the age of 16, he moved to Augusta and began working at the Forest Hills Hotel where he found the second love of his life, playing golf. Mr. Morris played golf at the Forest Hills Golf Course, later called GEA Golf Course and was a member for over 65 years. He also played at the Augusta Country Club, the Masters Golf Club, and many other courses around the states of Georgia and South Carolina.

Mr. Morris was retired from the Augusta Veterans Administration Lynwood Hospital after 35 years in 1976. Mr. Morris was very active in the National Federation of Federal Employees (NFFE) and served as president of the local chapter for three years and he helped to achieve the hospital insurance program which exists today. Mr. Morris, along with other NFFE members, was instrumental in starting the Veteran Administration Hospital Federal Credit Union in November 1955 and served as First Vice President that year. After retiring from The VA Hospital, Mr. Morris worked at the Forest Hills Golf Club for 20 years and continued there as a volunteer until his health began to decline in July 2014.

Mr. Morris was a member of the Scottish Rite of Freemasonry of the 32 degree, Valley of Augusta, Orient of Georgia for more than 62 years.

Mr. Morris was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 58 years, Jean Baston Morris, in 2002 and his only son, James Robert Morris in October 2014. Mr. Morris is survived by his daughter Shannon (Roger) Bledsoe of West Point, GA, his five grandchildren Anglea Morrow Broadaway (Keith) of Adairsville, GA, Alex D. Morrow (Amanda) of Nashville, TN, Ashley Morrow Townsend (Nathan) of Monroe, GA, Brandon Morris (Jerry) of Augusta, GA, and Brooklyn Morris Balliet (Mike) of North Augusta, SC. Mr. Morris is also survived by three brothers, Raymond Morris (Margarita) of North Augusta, SC, Alton Morris (Margaret) of Marietta, GA, and Ralph Morris of Corpse Christi, TX, and one sister Pauline Clark of Clearwater, FL. He is survived by seven great grand children, Deven Broadaway, Cara Broadaway, Evan Creech, Elliott Creech, Benjamin Balliet, Meredith Balliet, and Preston Townsend. He is also survived by his special niece Kathy Boyette (John) of Aiken, GA, and nephew Eric Morris of Charlotte, NC.

There will be a Celebration of Life in Augusta, GA scheduled at a later date. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to the American Cancer Society or to a charity of their choice.
