Today, we honor the life of Diana Godfrey Lakes, affectionately known as “Sput” and “Red”. Diana was born October 4, 1957 to JoAnn Godfrey Shefton and the late Charles Olin Godfrey in Atlanta, Georgia. Diana was a very kind -hearted person, a servant of God and a caretaker of everyone she encountered.
Diana graduated from Harper High School in 1975 and later graduated in Cosmotology from Atlanta Area Tech. She was married to Michael Lakes on September 29,1978. This union was blessed with three sons, Desmond, Travis and Justin. Diana was a loving mother, wife, sister, daughter and grandmother, who cared deeply for others and would do anything to help a person in need. She was many things to many people, but some of her most favored attributes were her fierce and unconditional love, strength, humor and one -ofa -kind spirit.
As the oldest of four siblings, she served as a nurturer and role model for her younger sisters, Cynthia, Sonja and the late Mary Godfrey. She was always there as a shoulder to cry on, or an ear to listen. She loved her family and was always sure to show it by being present for all major life milestones and providing guidance and care.
The consummate caretaker, Diana was known as “Mama Dee” by friends and co -workers, as many loved and appreciated her for her random acts of kindness and generosity and respected her for her strength and zero -tolerance for non -sense.
She leaves to cherish fond memories her husband, Michael Lakes of Riverdale, Georgia; her mother, JoAnn Godfrey Shefton of Fairburn, Georgia; her sons, Desmond Lakes, Travis Lakes and Justin Lakes of Fairburn, Georgia; sisters Cynthia Burgess (Bobby) of Fayetteville, Georgia and Sonja Holland (Gerald) of Atlanta, Georgia; her grandchildren, Travelle Lakes, Travis Lakes, Jr., Desmond Lakes Jr., Tristan Lakes as well as a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, aunts and friends. Arrangements by Thrash and Sons Funeral Home.
