Mr. Miles was born on March 3, 1951 in Midway, Alabama to the late Deacon Grover Miles, Sr. and Sarah Callie Lewis Miles. Roosevelt was number twelve of their thirteen children.

He was raised and educated in Midway, Alabama, graduated from Merritt High School in 1969 and attended Tuskegee Institute for welding. He worked at Winn Dixie for thirty years and, Tonee, Inc. for five years.

Roosevelt, Sr. and his lovely wife, Joann McNabb Miles, were blissfully married forty-seven years ago in Midway, Alabama, and have enjoyed the company of one another for the past fifty-four years. He was a lifetime member and faithful tither of Antioch Baptist Church in Midway, Alabama. While residing in Atlanta, Roosevelt, Sr. faithfully served and attended Sunday School and was an active member of the men’s ministry at Riverside Community Baptist Church.

Roosevelt liked traveling by car to Orlando (his favorite vacation destination), family reunions, and class reunions. However, it was not until January 18, 2020, that he flew for the first time to Miami, Florida. Roosevelt, Sr. loved sports, especially football and tennis. He was a passionate fan of the Atlanta Falcons, Atlanta Hawks, and the Atlanta Braves. Roosevelt also had an infectious smile and laugh. When his children didn’t make wise decisions, he would say, “You big dummy!” He never met a stranger, and he welcomed everyone into his home. His memory was razor sharp, and he could put a face and name together even after not seeing you for twenty years. His favorite past times included reading obituaries, the Union Springs Herald, playing the saxophone, listening to old school and gospel music, and watching Rev. Bill Winston on television. Roosevelt especially enjoyed hanging out with his brother, Eddie Lee, and playing Bid Whist and Spades with his boys.

He was preceded in death by his siblings, Clarence Miles, AC Miles, Lonnie Bell Woods, Queen Miles, Willie Miles, Sr., Vendell Miles, and Grover Miles, Jr. To cherish, honor, and carry on his legacy, Roosevelt, Sr. leaves his loving and faith-filled wife, Joann McNabb Miles; six children, Rodney (Teresa) Miles, Michael (Joeretta) Smith, Roosevelt (Stephanie) Miles, Jr., Rosalyn (Timothy) Miles Baker, Roderick Miles, and Jessica Pearl Turner; fourteen grandchildren, four great-grandchildren, two brothers, Eddie Lee (Dorothy) Miles, Sr. of Atlanta, GA and Robert (Delores) Glenn of St. Louis, MO; three sisters, Victoria (Walter) McClain of Opa Locka, FL, Penola (Cleveland) Massie of Miami, FL, and Ethel Ford of Midway, AL; two sisters-in law, Clara Miles of Chicago, IL and Gertrude Miles of Gary, IN; one brother-in-law, Ellis wood of Hamilton, IN; along with a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
